hi there- any advice or someone with similar experience perhaps?

have installed eac v.0.95 beta 3. ibm t23 thinkpad, running windows 2k pro. not much harddrive space (<5gb). installed mareo and have in eac folder to convert to flac. toshiba dvd rom drive 'sd-c2512'. no cache, no c2 but accurate stream enabled.

when eac launches i get an error message (canot find matching language file). in all the options folders the tabs are unlabelled (maybe this is normal..?), many drop down menus are empty, and I can't browse my :c folders. It 'can' rip, but painfully slowly and it crashes or hangs up very easily, often giving this error message:
"unhandled exception @ translation.440--> index range".

I have installed the recommended batch of adaptec aspi drivers.

my question is- is this a configuration, hardware or corrupted eac download problem? or which combination is most likely. Is there anything I can do?

hope you can help, thanks in advance

p.s. I haven't posted what firware I have for my drive because I don't know how to find out... but If someone tells me how Ill get it

Where EAC.exe is, there should be Languages folder, and language files inside it (English.txt for example) - is it there? In General tab (2nd from left) of EAC Options you can choose a language then (from the drop-down menu on the bottom).

Rutra80 is correct; looks like you extracted the downloaded EAC archive without re-creating the directories (folders) it contains. Check the Use Folder Names box in the extraction dialog if you use WinZip.

hi huys- thanks for your help. I redownloaded eac and extracted the files properly. Things are making alot more sense...smile.gif Still got some questions-

Turns out my drive can support c2. Shold i use it under the secure test and copy mode, or disable it and simply use secure copy. Both methods work, but the first is faster. Whats the verdict?

Secondly, badly scratched cds really seem to overwhelm eac and the speed goes right down to 0.1x (from 5-7x) or it just hangs. I have used cdex and it works but I get terrible copies. I have cleaned the cds with brasso, and run eac in burst and secure mode. Is it game over?

Lastly- how can I check the firmware version on my drive. Is there any risk in trying to flash update it to get faster rips?

Thanks again,

kita

Use test & copy for dics which are in good condition, secure mode for the scratched ones.

You can leave EAC running (some people get successful rips that take 24 hours) and see if you get a clean rip, but it can't work miracles. If you don't you'll need to try to physically repair the discs. There's a thread on disc repair here.

If you care more about perfect rips than speed, don't use C2, unless you're sure that C2 is accurate on your drive (on many drives it's not). Test & copy in secure mode doesn't make sense, it should be used in burst mode only (and then compare CRC of test with CRC of copy - they should match, if they don't then there were errors), when you're extracting in secure mode just use copy (without test).

You may try burst mode and hope that the errors will be inaudible.

Nero InfoTool will tell you the firmware version (Drive tab). There's always some risk in flashing - if flashing fails (due to power-shortage for example) the drive becomes useless, unless you can re-flash it or send for repair.
