I'm having a difficult time understanding how the C2 option in EAC works - even after reading many threads on this subject.

I have a badly scratched CD that I could not extract with C2 disabled. However, with C2 enabled, I got an error-free rip. Or, at least that's what EAC reports.

Do I need to carefully listen to these tracks for errors? Was there any interpolation involved?

I guess what I'm looking for is a simple explanation of how the errors were corrected.

Secure mode without C2: Reads twice and compares, and if differences is found then extra re-readings occure, to try to correct the errors...

Secure Mode with C2 : Reads once untill the drive returns a CU flag with the audio data, in which case EAC uses it's standard extra re-reading routines, to try to correct the errors...

If you rip with secure mode with C2, on a drive that dosen't reliably returns CU flags, then you will not know if the rip was secure, even though EAC dosen't report any errors, since EAC relies on the CU flagging capabilities of the drive, to determine if an error has occured...
