Should I

A Append gaps to previous track
B Append gaps to next track
C Leave out gaps(no perfect 1:1 copy of cd mad.gif )
D Rip the whole cd as 1 wav (inconvienient when using p2p, or as source for compilation cd's(split wav by cue to hardisk for every song used in the compilation cd))

Its too bad wav,flac,mp3,mpc,ogg,etc............ Don't include index 0 gap tags to tell audio players(winamp) howto handle cd gaps. Eg, no index 0 gap played unless tracks are consecutive in playlist

CD1 - track 1
gap is played
CD1 - track 2

CD1 - track 5
No gap played
CD3 - track 6

This is stream-of-consciousness, but it seems like the preferred way to rip and store is like this:

1. Rip whole CD to wav
2. Compress to lossless
3. Store the CD table of contents (TOC) to a file or a tag in the lossless file
4. Add support for parsing the TOC in player plugins
5. Ideally, add a way for player plugins to pass this up to the player so that a playlist could be generated automatically and buttons on the player could be used to move within tracks (e.g. CD index points), and even better, playlists could point to tracks inside the TOC so it would be possible to make a playlist that has different tracks from different CDs.

So I ask more knowledgable people:

Are cue sheets able to store all of what is in the CD TOC? If not, is there a standard for it?

When I archive my CDs I run a little proggie I wrote to dump the TOC to a text file. From this, different hashes can be made automatically (CDDB, CDindex, etc). I was thinking about adding a FLAC tag for it but don't want to create yet another "standard" if there's already something like that.

entire wave

just a hint for another solution

copy as entire wave
encode into vorbis.
Make a chapter list over the soundtracks

mux into .ogm file with oggmux and play with media player.

Perhaps mp3cue is what some of you guys are looking for? At least Josh's 5th request (the first bit) can be satisfied with that. (Or are you talking about something completely different...? ph34r.gif)

If you are going to split the tracks, you might as well get rid of the gaps, right?
CiTay
I use "Append gaps to previous track".

If you rip separate tracks and want a 1:1 copy, don't even detect gaps smile.gif .

Is there a difference between the track pre-gap and what is between index 00 and index 01 for a track? I thought they were the same, in which case if you remove it and it's not silent you'll have a discontinuity.

I don't know; maybe Pio can answer that. smile.gif

I use the PiMP guide to encode with MPC, which requires you to detect the pre-gaps before extraction. This, I think, because MPC is a gapless encoder, is purely for the creation of the CUE sheet should you or someone else want to burn the tracks to a CD with the original gaps.

But maybe I am wrong. smile.gif

Question: In EAC, u can press F4 to detect the gaps, but sometimes
it gets stuck and I'm forced to press "cancel". I'm using gap detection
method B (A doesn't work and C works worse than B, for my drive)
What can I do? Is there a way to detect the gap of a particular
track instead of processing the entire cd?
Another thing: If u don't detect gaps before recording, won't they be
appended to your tracks?

They will.
