When I had finally found my Microsoft Office CD and installed the Ariel Unicode font, now it's suddenly all displayed sideways!!! Even if I select another unicode font, that also displays it sideways now. What on earth have I done???

Check that you're using Arial Unicode MS and not @Arial Unicode MS. Mine have never turned 90 degrees, but they've gone a little off-kilter because of that.
Edit: Perhaps a localization setting in Windows?

Check that you're using Arial Unicode MS and not @Arial Unicode MS.
