I thought I'd put a longer sample ( that one is actually 12 seconds rather than 20... ). I have to say that LAME has improved since when I reported it, so congratulations.

BTW, if anyone is interested in the full sample (3:40), just ask. Yet, this is a pretty simple song, not much worth tongue.gif (A rework or a song that I initially made when the SB AWE32 appeared).

The good old AWE32 was my first soundcard. I would still use it, but it is too long to fit into my third PC, which has a bit newer and not as good SB16 PCI (I don't use that PC for anything seriously audio related). What is the story behind the filename?

As i said, it has to do with the soundcard.

I bought the AWE32 PNP model, with 512MB of RAM (yes, that looong one with two memory sockets smile.gif ) in 1996, with a new PC. I was starting to use Tracker programs at that time ( Scream Tracker, fasttracker..), and with the new soundcard, i wanted to give a try to MIDI.
So I fired up the Creative Voyetra, and started putting notes from the Synth Bass1 and Synth Bass2.

I liked what i was doing, so i decided to sample those sounds with the Creative Wave Editor, and port the song to Impulse Tracker 2. There, I finished it, adding a guitar, and some small changes. (The MIDI one wasn't even 1 minute long).

That was in 1997 already. From then on, I moved to other programs (because those were based on MS-DOS), tried ModPlug Tracker, later I moved to Buzz, and Finally i found a program called Psycle, which was like an old tracker, but in windows and with VST support.

When I got some practice with it, i decided to port this song to it, using VST's instead of samples. And that's what this sample is extracted from. The bass sound isn't really a VST (Psycle has an own plugin format too), it's a basic saw down sound, with filter modulation and a bit of chorus.
