Full Version: Distinctive pop a tag problem?

I have been recently archiving my CD collection and have noticed a distinctive static 'pop' at the beginning of many tracks. This only seems to be an issue on my MP3 player (RCA Lyra 40GB). I have done some searching and read a little about the possibility of the tag (v2) causing something like this if the player has an issue with something in the tag. Can anyone confirm this and possibly offer a suggestion for fixing it (change tagging options, etc).

Not sure if it makes a difference for this question, but I am using the following :

EAC v.95 beta 3
Lame 3.97b1 (-V 0 --vbr-new --add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2 --ignore-tag-errors --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n" --tg "%m" %s %d)
AccurateRip

Thanks,
Jason

If the id3v2 tag is causing the problem, replace "--add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2" with "--id3v1-only" when you rip. I don't have any good suggestions for removing the id3v2 tags from the files you already ripped, though.

I figured I could do that, but would rather be able to keep the v2 tags, and was wondering if anyone else had dealt with this and if there might be some specific work around or a certain tag element I could eliminate to remedy the problem.

Um, the only person who can really check if it's the ID3v2 that's getting in the way, is you.

Why not try removing ID3v2 from just one song, to check it yourself?

I plan to as soon as I get a chance but figured I would take a shot at picking some brains here before I re-invent the wheel.

I've noticed a similar phenomenon recently, but without an RCA player; I have this problem with all of the playback software on my Linux/Ubuntu-Breezy box.

At first, I thought it was the tags, too, so I did some experiments:
1. verify that mpg321 plays the pop on a particular mp3
2. lame --decode on the file into a wav... the wav does NOT have the pop.
3. re-encode the wav with lame (now tags are stripped)... pop comes back
4. re-encode the wav with the --id3v1-only switch... pop is still present

So then I thought maybe it was my particular version of lame... I tried 3.96, 3.95, 3.93, and 3.97... all have the same results.

At this point, I'm wondering if it's my playback software; if all of the software is linked to the same library of MAD, maybe this is the problem.

I suspect that my particular problem is different than the original poster's problem, but maybe my experience can be of some use to him.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks.
