Full Version: Mp3 Server Software

Hi.

I'm getting fed up with constantly having to change cd's, often losting track of where things are in my encoded music collection. That's why I'm going to convert my good old PII-233 box to an MP3 server where I expect to archive all my music files.

I already have the hardware I need. But I'm not so sure about the software.

I want to be able to browse and stream my music from my other computers and maybe from outside the network. But I also would like to be able to tell the server to play something, because it will be conected to my amp.

So I need to remotely control playing in the server and, at the same time, I need it to serve the collection to the "outer world".

I've been trying php scripts running on top of apache/mod_perl/mysql like Andromeda, MORG (the coolest), netjuke, kplaylist, RIMPS and some more I couldn't get to install properly. I'm also interested in the database capabilities of the setup. I don't talk Perl or PHP.

So, finally, do you wisers have any advice about this kind of software?
What kind of similar systems do you run?
Are there other or simpler solutions?

Thank you all in advance

guictx

Some info about the box:
PII-233
192 Mb RAM
S3 Virge 4 Mb
2X40 Gb + 1X6 Gb HD
Ethernet 10/100 Mbit
Mandrake 9 or Red Hat 8
The software must have support mp3, ape and ogg

I'm not sure what you mean by:

"But I also would like to be able to tell the server to play something, because it will be conected to my amp."

if i understand it correctly, you will need some sort of remote controlling tool, such as pc-anywhere for that

anyway, i use a php script called netjuke, look for it at freshmeat.net, very easy to use and can cope with mp3,ogg and wma....

Kind of... but I would prefer something linux based, that not only plays, but keeps an SQL database of your collection. Linux comes with with apache/perl/mysql/php and demands less resources. I don't even need an X session to run a server like this one.

I like MORG. Looks good, it's simple, let's you add some images, but it doesn't stores data in sql yet.

I think I'll have to rely in one script for serving the files and another one to remotely control mp3 playing in the server.

Well, guictx

netjuke DOES keep it in a database, i'm running it myself on my linux router, and i use it from school to listen to my stuff, there's even a login/administer users feature, just take a look at it :=)
guictx
ok, i'm lagging a bit behind your replies.

@jenny

I'll check those, thanks.

@treech

Yes I was thinking about remote controlling the server. I can use VNC for that, but it would be neat to do it in the same mp3 server script.

I gave netjuke a closer look and it looks great. I just can't figure out why it doesn't add any files to the database. Maybe that's because i'm at work remote controlling the server at home or because atm i have apache running on windows. Anyway if I get this thing to work I'll probably stick with it.

Thanks treech.

As for remote controlling the server player, let's see if I can learn a bit of PHP and make a few changes to netjuke.

From the netjuke forum at sourceforge:

Also, for those interested in testing before the next version is released (needs testing, and translation files), the version in cvs has the first incarnation of the jukebox feature (server-play), RealAudio support in the Audio File Finder, uses md5 for user passwords, removes the cookie requirement, etc.

Guess I won't need to learn php for the moment. smile.gif

I'm also currently building up a Vorbis/MP3 jukebox based on Debian. It still has it's own monitor and I'm using XMMS to play the songs. But I'd like to control the playlist, search the files and so on from a web browser on my notebook.

I checked GiantDisc, which is an Ogg Vorbis / MP3 jukebox with emphasize on remote control through Palm OS. This project is quite popular, unfortunately it lacks a web interface (they have one, but use it for streaming). And as it looks the author is also not interested in implementing this feature (if I only had a Palm wink.gif ).

PHPDj seems to be right for what I want, but it lacks documentation and doesn't use a database for advanced administration of the songs. Hmm...either I have to wait for Netjuke or do something on my own.
