Hi, I've been playing around with both the nero aac encoder and the itunes one. To my ears the itunes encoder is better and want to convert cds to this format. However I hate itunes with a passion so was wondering how I can get the best of the encoder without all the other crap. I want if possible to use it with EAC
Many thanks, hope you can help

iTunes just uses QuickTime for it's AAC stuff (and everything else) - quicktime player will convert most files to AAC, or any program that uses the quicktime library will have the ability as well. On the mac everything uses quicktime so there are simple apps that have batch processing capability etc...there are even command line tools which will manipulate and create with little fuss. Surely windows has something similar, given it's large userbase. I don't use it but discreet cleaner comes to mind (batch processing, mp4 output, quicktime etc) - whether you could integrate it into EAC is another thing completely...

Use itunesencode with EAC. itunesencode is a front end for QT in itunes. Search will turn up lots of info

Yup, try searching for topics w/ 'iTunesEncode' in it.

With iTunesencode you still need iTunes installed on your machine.
You can use REACT + iTunesencode.exe for an easy rip with EAC.

I wonder why people bother with going through iTunes when you can just directly use QT. I mean you can even use java to do it.

Then make one so we can use it and then praise you like there's no end. =)
And this thread is about how to bypass iTunes...

http://developer.apple.com/quicktime/qtjava/Tagging. QT's SDK offers no real support for tagging. iTunes' SDK does.
Plus, QT's SDK is quite a bit more complicated. Writing something to create an AAC is a real PITA using the QT components directly.
Apple stop you encoding through QT unless you upgrade to pro, we once had an encoder that used QT in this raw method.

Hmm i think you'll find it doesn't, only the quicktime player application is crippled in standard mode. The underlying API is totally unlocked - an example of this is the handful of little apps people have made to streamline and batch encode iPod suitable video (not requiring pro licenses)
QT not exposing an interface for tagging mp4 would certainly explain everyone using iTunes though (you could use mp4creator/mp4ui to tag afterwards)
sh1leshk4 i think you must have misunderstood my post as i was proposing a possible method of removing dependance on iTunes whilst retaining the quicktime encoder. I couldn't code to save my life (although i have managed to make an applescript which will encode the contents of a folder of to a bunch of .m4a files independent of itunes - if anyone wants it let me know)

Probably, or probably not.
Actually, I was serious about the proggie thing. =)
Anyway, I'm not a Mac user so iTunesEncode for me all the way if I ever want to encode using QT AAC.

Then it would be possible to decode m4p files, which it cannot.

By totally unlocked i meant pro features totally functional, not unlocked as in a purposely broken drm implementation. But you knew that.
