i am after an eitor that will aloow me to cut / join (basic functions) an mp2 file so that it stays in it's native file - i don't want to be recoding it to wav or mp3.. is there such a program that anyone can recommend?

Womble MPEG Video Wizard It's not free, but it will do what you want and much more. You can cut/edit, add fades/transitions, without re-encoding or re-encoding just the frames edited (video and audio).

mp3DirectCut (freeware) in spite of the name, it also handles mp2 files (don't forget to install mpglib.dll).
