Every time I get a new audio card I am offered the chance to install SoundFonts, or configure SoundFont banks... WTF is a SoundFont bank?? Am I going to suffer for not having it, or is it something for music/sound editors?

It is something for music/sound editors. Samplebanks actually. That is, samples to load into a sampler of, for example, a Piano.
Axon
Also MIDI players.

Hmmm, well, perhaps I can cram another question in here then.

With a Creative card, if you don't install the EAX console, does the card simply use the default settings (e.g. CMSS over CMSS2) or do you lose those features all together?

You lose them (thank god)

Try the kx drivers (search em on google)

So, as a gamer and seeing as games lean heavily (unfortunately) on EAX for providing any feeling of 3D, should I be looking to install the EAX console?
