I started messing with dBpowerAMP, and it has a setting for Window Media Audio v9.1 as :

VBR Quality 98, 44kHz, stereo VBR
VBR Quality 90, 44kHz, stereo VBR
VBR Quality 75, 44kHz, stereo VBR
VBR Quality 50, 44kHz, stereo VBR
VBR Quality 25, 44kHz, stereo VBR
VBR Quality 10, 44kHz, stereo VBR

THis might be a stupid question, but are the 98,90,75,50,25,10 some type of percentage of quality of the original?

probably.. as i recall MS states that wma offers cd quality at 64kbps, so 98kbps would be overkill there

it's probably just 98% of the 64kbps quality benchmark

No.

For some reason, though they claim "CD quality at 64kbps", their 100% quality reference is much higher than 64kbps. It's been so long since I last used WMA, I'm really just guessing here, but I think it was 192kbps.

So much for truth in advertising.

i think they are 'supposed' to represent a % quality.. but they are just high-to-low (or should it say low-to-lower... uh oh.. i better watch out for tos8) settings for vbr. i dont think there is any standard to go by for what 50% quality really means.

i've seen quite a few posts from people who use quality 25 for their portable wma players

Have you heard problems with a ~240Kbps VBR (Q98) wma 9.1 file to say it is low quality?

98% actually produces very large files, almost as large as WMA lossless. I have obtained good results using Q 75, for classical orchestral produces around 160 ~ 180 kbps average, for piano solo depends on volume, can range from 80 to 180 kbps average. Sound quality is good, much less artifacting (beeps, clicks, etc.) than the CBR settings.
I have not tried it for pop music.
