Full Version: CDparanoia "-i" option

I am trying to recover a CD that has suffered "disc-rot" on tracks closest to the outer edge.

I originally tried "EAC", but the results were terrible. It would usually get to some point in the track where it decided things were getting a bit too hard, and just skip onto the next track, missing a great chunk of material.

I tried CDparanoia with considerably more success, it would read the entire track at least, and just miss out portions that were indeed too hard. At least most of the track was complete!

However, I wanted to use the "-i" option that is listed on the paranoia manual page, to find out the missing "sector" numbers. I was trying as many different CD drives as I could lay my hands on, hoping to patch the tracks back together. But when I specified "-i", nothing happened.

After much searching, I found this... "The documentation on the CDParanoia website indicated that the '-I' option would log errors during the rip to a file, but that option doesn't appear to be in the 9.8 release." on freshmeat.net

I also found a single reference to a statement that said something along the lines "... the -i option was not implemented (could have been "enabled") in release 9.8..." Unfortunately, after nearly an hour of searching the net, I can not find this reference again.

So, to all those in the know out there, was the "-i" option *ever* incorporated into CDparanoia?
Was it only ever a "if I get the time to write it"?
Did any of the earlier releases include it?

I have also noticed that CDparanoia has not been maintained for quite a while (about 3 years), and indeed, there has been some discussion about this on this very forum (but still nothing has happened).
Cheers,
MM

In release 9.8 the option 'i' is allowed but it does nothing, and it probably
never did anything. Since you have access to many drives, get a plextor
and try Plextools' extraction strategy 5.

Thanks for the tip.

I guess what I was asking is whether the "i" option ever existed (in the releases up to, but not including, release 9.8)?

Did you have the "Skip track extraction on read or sync errors" option checked? If so, try EAC again without it selected. Even if there is an error, it might be inaudible.

I believe that the only logging option with cdparanoia is to use the -e switch and redirect stderr to a file. For some reason I don't understand, redirecting stdout doesn't work.

thanx
