I have a new PC, but love my old foobar settings too much to leave them!

I copied all the components accross and tried exporting my Columns UI settings, and importing them on the new PC, but this doesnt work.

What am I doing wrong or not doing?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

i would install a clean normal foobar to get the correct file associations and links, then i would erase manually the install directory and copy the old foobar directory that has the config you like. It works for me.

^ yup, that method sounds like it should work, as long as both the old computer and new computer are running Windows XP/2000 (or both are running Windows 98/ME).

What's the proper way to do this?

It involves the install option at the beginning so the settings are stored in c:\program files\application data\<user>\foobar2000\ or something rather.

Then every time you reinstall windows or want to transfer it, it won't get wiped?

If you have user profiles enabled, then you'll have two directories to copy to the new computer: the foobar2000 program directory under "%ProgramFiles%", and the foobar2000 profile directory under "%UserProfile%\Application Data". If user profiles is disabled, you just need to copy the program directory.

Okay, I will be installing XP soon. So if I were to switch from user profiles to no user profiles, where does that %UserProfile%\Application Data\foobar2000 data go?

When i have to transfer my settings, this is what i do:

1. Export the .fcs file

2. zip the foobar2000 folder in program files

3. install foobar2000 (minimal mode)*

4. unzip the foobar2000 zip, overwriting all files

5. import the fcs

* Install to restore associations etc. (but i guess you can use the foobar2000- associations program for this). I install in minimal mode because i use newer version of components (than the one provided with 0.8.3 special installer) and have also removed some components i don't use.

** you may have to nuke the database (which has "links" of the original computer) if you are moving the settings to a new computer.
