Full Version: iPod at lowest volume is still too loud

I listen to my iPod while falling asleep in a quiet room. I find that even with the iPod at lowest volume (one little fraction of a tick above dead silent), it quickly becomes too loud. I'm using Grado SR60s, which I guess are relatively low impedance, but I'm wondering why no one else seems to have this problem. I mean, once your ears cool down (~60 seconds), it's not background noise anymore, and the music becomes a real hindrance to falling asleep.

I used to have a Zen Xtra and had the same problem, but found an EQ setting that effectively muffled the sound enough; however, none of the iPod EQ settings do the trick.

I know in the UK the iPods don't amp nearly as much. Is there a way to convert the iPod to "UK mode"? Or is there some other setting to bring the volume down to something like half it's lowest setting? Barring that, I guess I could get an in-line attenuator--can anyone recommend one?

goPod http://gopod.free-go.net/ will allow you to cap or uncap the volume limit.

Not sure if it make a difference at the low end though.

So does anyone know if it's a straight cap, or if it affects the entire volume scale?

Thinks it just removes the 100db cap?

I don't think you'll be able to do what you're asking unless you had a separate amp that would allow you to go lower. I think falling asleep you tend to focus on the loudest sound, well I do anyways smile.gif

Radio Shack makes a simple inline volume control that ought to set you right:

It is just a variable in-line resistor, so it doesn't go all the way to 0dB. However, it will do some serious attenuation. I use this with Grados on my laptop, since the headphone output is pretty "hot".

For $7, can't be beat.

I've exactly the same issue Mazzer.
I'm using a EU iPod though and even with the lower volume cap I find it very annoying.

A few months ago I tried finding a small resistor for attenuating the signal. Only found one and it was about 25usd, a bit to expsnsive. Didn't know they could be found that cheap, better gonna look again smile.gif

Note: Have others noticed that even though when signal is at 0% there is sound output (using e3c plugs, iPod mini 2gen)
