hi all

iam trying to get back into coding and well iam all confused again huh.gif

my reference for this post is

List of recommended LAME settings

QUOTE
(LAME Frontends)
All2Lame All2Lame is recommended instead of Razorlame or Easylame
Foobar2000 : Foobar2k is not only a Lame GUI, but an all-in-one Audio solution, a Player, which is also a replacement for eg. Winamp or Windows Media Player.

Reencode mp3 (high bitrate with ID3 tags) to mp3 (low bitrate) and include tags to new mp3 file : Try Monkeys Audio http://www.monkeysaudio.com/, or better: foobar 2000, use the CLI encoder: http://www.saunalahti.fi/cse/html/foobar.html

ive been using RazorLame version 1.1.5.1342
i like my sound files to be at 128kbps and when i get my sound files they are already .mp3 files so i have to reencode my files, the main reason for this is because it saves me HD space as i cant afford a new one at this time or anytime soon.
so what ive been doing is reencoding this way from .mp3 to .wav to .mp3 using the preset CD in the RazorLame presets folder and then i move the slider to 128kbps optimization is set to quality [ -b 128 -m s -h ]

now after reading that thread above iam wondering why iam using RazorLame ? shall i change to Foobar2000 or something else ?
is there a better way to change my files to 128kbps ?

thanks for the help

I would suggest using a different frontend. Also, if you must stick with 128, I'd suggest using ABR 128. Also, do you realize that you are losing quality by transcoding mp3>mp3?

And mp3 -> wav -> mp3 isn't really necessary.
Newer frontends should be able to just pipe the transcode job.

ok thanks for the replies

iam aware that i loose quality by transcoding but i dont mind that.

so shall i use Foobar2k ? for what i want to do ?

hi all

sorry for such a late reply.
iam finally finding the time to do what i want to do in a few days.
so ive downloaded foobar2000 and the lame 3.97b2.

previously when i used Razorlame i used this for my recoding
-b 128 -m s -h

and so you know , i know almost nothing about coding but i know iam loosing quality when i do what iam doing but thats ok.

could someone run me through the settings i need to choose and whatever else for using foobar to what i want to do please , all this stuff really confuse's me.

foobar2000 comes with the discwriter component (converter). You can set the LAME encoder there to use the "-V5 --vbr-new" quality setting, which will be around 128 kbps. All you need to do then, is to place LAME in the foobar2000 folder, and right-click on the files in your playlist, select convert : convert to...

Then, pick the LAME (mp3) -V5 --vbr-new preset.

ok great thanks alot smile.gif

I use Razorlame because you can enter in the exact command line that you want. I couldn't get All2lame to work on my computer for some reason. I like Razorlame actually.

That's very thoughtful of you to concern yourself with quality. Very much like planning a trip through the sewers and worrying about the choice of deodorant.
