Full Version: FAAD2 Winamp plugin - Rarewares vs. Audiocoding

Hi,
There might be a problem with different FAAD2 versions that are around.

I had a problem with one HE AAC sample - it didn't sound right but I couldn't figure out what was the problem. Long story short - when I installed Winamp plugin in_mp4.dll from audiocoding.com this sample sounded ok. It didn't sound ok with in_mp4.dll downloaded from rarewares.com.

It would be good if Roberto could check and verify if this really is the case.

The HE AAC sample is here.

blink.gif i though the audiocoding.com in_mp4 was the one on rarewares
maybe audiocoding updated it?

audiocoding.com in_mp4 -> Submitted Date: 2004/8/14
i think the one i have is from 03 wink.gif

(cant test the file, not on my computer...)

The versions are different:

Rarewares: 2.1 beta compiled on Jul 9 2004
Audiocoding: 2.0 compiled on Feb 8 2004

Sometimes (haven't been able to pinpoint what causes it) and with both versions of the AudioCoding.com plug-in I get "Channel coupling not yet implemneted" when trying to playback VBR HE-AAC files encoded with Nero 6.6.0.18 (no PNS, no MP4 container), while the default Winamp one handles them without any probs, anyone experiences the same?

Just tested your sample, same result here: it doesn't sound right (strange echo at the beginning, underwater effect) with v2.1 beta of the AC plug-in and plays fine with the 2.0 one and the default Nullsoft decoder too.

the directshow decoder coreaac v1.0b9 (based on aac decoder v1.1 & faad 2.1beta) also sounds bad on this sample sad.gif

Have you tried enabling the in_mp3 default Winamp 5.2 beta plug-in for AAC files playback? Does it sound okay there too?

It appears That FAAD is no longer being actively developed. FAAD CVS appears stalled, Menno has not posted here or at audiocoding.com in well over 9 months. Maybe to busy at Ahead to persue further development.

i've collected compatibility patches for faad2 2.1beta and they are integrated into RW/Debian. the sources are at http://xmixahlx.dyndns.org/debian/

this sample sounds bad on lamip/xmms (using faad2 2.1beta)

it sounds ok with realplayer (uses the helix aac decoder, iirc)

That would be a disaster...

I think it sounded fine with in_mp3 (can't retest it right now, in class tongue.gif , supposed to pay attention)

I'm trying to find a newer version of Audiocoding's in_m4.dll than the one from July 9th, 2004 somewhere, because I use 1by1 as my main audio player which uses Winamp plugins. The Nullsoft in_mp4.dll combined with in_mp3.dll do not work with 1by1, so I'm stuck with the old plugin from Audiocoding. It does not recognize SBR encoded AAC files correctly and lists them as LC files with 22 kHz sample rate instead of using the SBR profile with 44.1 kHz sample rate in the file info. The decoding is fine though, I can hear the upper frequencies in the playback.

Is there a chance that someone will compile a new version based on the latest FAAD2 updates, or does the FAAC Sourceforge repository no longer include the code for in_mp4.dll? It might also be interesting for other audio players that still use Winamp plugins.
