Very new to all this and wonder about the following?

I am using CDex (might look at EAC soon) and foobar. When I want to make a copy of a cd that is now ripped to .wav on my hard drive I use the Windows media player "copy to".

Is the sound quality transfer any less than using say, Nero, using foobar somehow, or any other methods.

I have one experience with Windows Media Player, two and a half years ago. Possibly current versions are different but at that time it unconditionally did a lossy compress when it extracted from CD.

A friend wanted me to make me a copy of a CD of his own recordings, produced entirely with some mixing desk that does not output to computer but has its own CD writer. I was going to do the operation merely for the convenience of the moment. However, I could find no CD writing software on his computer so he had to get involved anyway.

He showed me that he extracted the CD contents to hard disk with Media Player, then wrote the CD with the same program. Something did not seem right so I experimented. Media Player had two operating modes: standard and high quality (or some such designations).

Neither produced files in wav format. I don't remember what format it was but there were no other options. The "high quality" files were significantly larger than the "standard" ones, but both were much smaller than uncompressed wav files. They were also significantly smaller than I ever get with lossless compression.

Of course, Media Player converted these compressed files to uncompressed in order to write them to CD-R, but there is no recovery of lost data from lossy compression.

There should be an option in the players preferences that allows you to specify the output format. By default it is, of course, WMA. However you can change it to WAV. Spend a minute and look at you options before concluding it can't be done, although I personally think WMP is crap. WMP 9 & 10 both allow you to chose a format. When it matters, use EAC to rip.

EDIT: I checked WMP 10 and its best option is WMA Lossless. But I recall WMP9 having wav outputs for ripping.

EDIT 2: To simplify, why not just get something like Burrrn? It's quite easy to use and burns many formats, including WAV files.

Unless the writing routines in a burning app is buggy, there will be no quality differences from one burning app to another... The differences between the different burning apps lies in their stability, memory usage, format support, features and gui design... Writing quality is dependant on the drive, speed and media used...

Like Duble0Syx, i will also recommend you to use Burrrn for your audio CD writing needs, as there is simply no equal in this area smile.gif
