hello
i just encoded a file using lame 3.98a3
lame -V2 input.wav out.mp3
and checked using Mr Q Man
it shows --preset fast standard i.e. VBR NEW routine
but lame --longhelp shows default mode of VBR is vbr old.
is it by mistake?

it's not a mistake.
LAME alphas are not really "releases", they are more or less tagged snapshots.
