so i decided to test allofmp3.com's 128kbps CBR option..
the result was a very badly encoded mp3...

i checked it out in encspot, but it says lame 3.97 beta (no lame header), it seems to have no lowpass, no LR frames used, who does quality control??

In their documentation they say they use the -k switch. So that's why.
But they seem not to use it as a rule. In case I don't download lossless, I usually download @ abr 256 as I prefer high bitrate anyway. With this lowpass is there, quality is fine.

I think it's only used with CBR, and according to their help pages only from 160kbps upwards; That's what they write:

CODE
128 kBps bit rate: -q0 -m j (highest quality, joint-stereo)

160 kBps bit rate and higher: -q0 -k (highest quality, stereo, psycho-acoustic filters disabled)

If you are using presets, you can choose one of these:
alt-preset standard
alt-preset extreme
alt-preset insane
alt-preset 128-320 (abr)

So it's very advisable only to use preset-based encodings, as they apparently do not mess with the settings in this case (-k with 160 kbps? they must be kidding??)

Is this even legal? I mean they are charging for the size of the file it seems so they are like covering bw costs.

Ie: an album w/192 Kbps is like $1.37 while a FLAC album is like 6.82. Im from the US and to me this is very ... suspecious.

Can anyone shed some light on this cuz if this is indeed legal ... wow this is really cheap. :-/ LossLess Quality CDs for under $7. Do the artists get any of this or is it just the russian based company ?

I think it's legal in russia. I remember having read the company has treaties with organisations who are marketing the rights of the artists, writers, etc. However it's not entirely clear whether legality applies to customers outside of russia, or whether it's up to the customer to find out such complicated things. The phono industry outside of russia considers it being not legal AFAIK.
