Ok... I got a couple of mp3 albums of dream theater, and was surprised to see that I didn't see any tags... When I opened them in winamp, everything worked fine...
Here are some shots for comparrison:

All tag options in foobar are set as default, although switching some to ID3v1+ID3v2 didn't help...

These files seem to have APEv2 tags which are prefered over ID3v1 and ID3v2 with foobar2000 0.8.3. These tags were added by MP3Gain.

Try to remove them if you don't need them.

But is there any way to make foobar recognize these tags?

How about using other software (such as Winamp) to write ID3v2 tags, then use foobar2000 to read?

Yes, just remove the APEv2 tags, if you don't need them. Or use the latest beta of foobar2000 0.9.

This has nothing to do with the problem the OP has.

APEv2?
I only see ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags... could you please explain this to me?
What are these APEv2 tags?

You have these APEv2 tags, because MP3Gain adds APEv2 tags as undo information to your files (you can disable this in MP3Gain).

Just install foobar2000 0.9 to solve your problem smile.gif

MP3Gain seems to have caused a lot of confusion this way! Is it a problem, as such, that could be bugfixed, or is it just an inconvenience?

Agreed. It would be better if MP3Gain copies the information from an existing ID3v1/ID3v2 tag to the APEv2 tag.

foobar2000 0.9 merges tags from different tag formats into one "view" to circumvent such situations.

Okay, thanks.

To circumvent this I just turn off the undo feature ("Options" > "Tags" > "Ignore (do not read or write tags)").

I expect I will use foobar 0.9 from now on anyway.
