ok my understanding is that music is output in stereo ie 2 speakers in foobar or any other program

so if you have music coming out of a 5.1 system then you are either using a component, where there arnt yet for the current RC

or you have something setup in your soundcard making the stereo sound in you sound card into a 5.1 signal or at least an emulation

so perhaps you should try updating your sound card drivers.

what speakers/soundcard are you using

i personally have the logitech z680's and run my music in stereoX2 mode on my speakers, with no effects running on my audigy 2 platinum just as pure as possible.

so check those things as well...

could be a bug in RC but I doubt they would of changed something like that

If you want to see what foobar2000 outputs, you an install the channel usage visualisation from my beta page. Use "View/Visualisations/Channel Usage" from the main menu to activate it.

That assumption is absolutely false.
In foobar2000 it is perfectly possible to play 5.1 files (ac3, flac or whatever).
But it wouldn't hurt to check if the "allow hardware (up)mixing" in the output module makes any difference (at least it was there in 0.8.x).

wowza ok so now i know i am wrong
ok i should of specifically stated as thought that most cd's ie music cd's that use the mp3 format, which i use generally are compressed to 2 channels.

if this is wrong, then i would like to understand more.

i know there is a 5.1 compatible aac type file but alot of people dont listen to 5.1 audio on a day to day basis as far as i am aware...

i used to output my music to 5.1 but it sounded grainy, thats because i upmixed to 5.1 from 2 channel im guessing...

any further information appreciated..
