Hi,
I have a little problem with my Realtek ACL850 onboard sound device:

It has a optical digital output wich i connect to my surround system, but this surround system can only take 44.1 kHz sampled digital inputs.

The ACL850 has a default output of 48 kHz sampled digital data, so it won't work with my surround system. I couldn't find any way to change the output to 44.1 kHz yet. I wrote to the support but they couldn't help me.

I use a normal AC97 driver from realtek, version 3.83 at the moment. (wdm_a383.exe)

Any thoughts on this?

That must be a very weird sourround system then, since DVD are all 48KHz, if I am not mistaken.
What corporation would produce a sorround system that can't playback DVD sound? Tell us more smile.gif

Its a Yamaha MTIB 105 system, with a RX-V357 receiver/amplifier. Everything else is fine with it, no High-End, but i wasn't going to buy something really expensive anyway.

I bought it recently and just discovered that it can only take 48 kHz digital signals as stereo. Since my PC is my only major sound source, it would be OK with me, if i get my pc to produce 44.1 signals.
I think it's a bit weird too, even my Playstation 2 sends 48 kHz sampled digital audio.

If i don't get it working soon, i'll return the system.

I just got a reply from the support, it's somewhere between funny and sad:

Hi,
I'm using a Realtek ACL850 onboard with digital optical output. I read in the manual that on default it produces 48khz sampled audio, my problem is that my amplifier can only take 44.1khz sampled inputs from digital audio.

Is there any way to change the sampling rate of the digital output?

I'm running Windows 2000 pro and the motherboard is an Epox 4pda5+ with, as i said, an ACL850 sound device on board.

Thanks for you time,

Hi,

You can try to set 44.1KHz for SPDIF-Out .

So i wrote them again and asked, what configuration tool that is and where i get it, no more answers yet ....

My configuration Menu looks different and doesn't have that option, anyone knows how i get it?

Just been reading the spec on your amp from Yamaha's website. Where do you get the idea it'll only accept 44.1KHz?

Page 9 of the manual: "Both digital input jacks are acceptable for 96 kHz sampling digital signals."

Though annoyingly I cannot find anywhere it gives you the specifics of what it accepts other than that!?

In the last part, troubleshooting page 50, it says that inputs with 48 kHz sampling are taken as stereo only. ... At least in my version, I'm from germany so i have the german version of the manual and receiver. If there are differences ... or just a translation error.

If it's not the 48 kHz, then I'm still clueless why my pc and ps2 both dont give correct 5.1 sound.

Edit: I just downloaded the english manual from yamaha (download here) and there it says "greater than 48 kHz".

So if it's not the 48 kHz, wich i think now, cause i trust the english manual more, there are a few possibilities left:

(1) I'm to dumb to set the amplifier right and it's all my fault. I really hope this isn't the case! And i doubt it anyway.

(2) The Sounddevice my PC can produces 8 channel audio, but it only transmits stereo over the optical digital output. Highly unlikely i think, but you never know ...
If this is the case, then it's still unclear why my Playstation 2 didn't give me any surround sound when i tried to play a DVD on it. A Concert Music DVD wich clearly stated it is 5.1 Dolby DTS and some other Mode i forgot that i could select, i tried both and only got sound on the both front speaker.

I doubt that too smile.gif

Hmm, have you tried posting on some AV forums as they maybe able to help better with this sort of problem.

The onboard sound (think it's the same as I have) will pass through DTS/DD over the optical out if you tell it too but unless your software can decode it, it won't pass it over the analogue outputs.

Have you tried plugging in a normal DVD player? Also making sure the amp is selecting the right mode? You'll have to make sure it's auto-selecting for most stuff. I leave mine on auto and it's never failed me yet.

Tomorow a friend will visit me with a USB Soundblaster that can do 5.1 and he knows who to configure it. And he'll bring some more DTS Sound DVD's to test in my Playstation 2. I only own 1 DVD and no standalone DVD Player, only my PS2. But it should be fine for that.

I hope i know more then ...

Seems to be just a Problem with the Soundcard Software. DD and DTS worked now, but the test program still can only reach the 2 front speaker ...
