When updating some tags with the newest foobar2000 0.9 RC (2006-02-24), and reloading the files in 0.8.3, I encountered the following issues (in 0.8.3) :
  • The DATE tag has disappeared
  • A "comment:" string was added in the COMMENT tag

Comments:
  • I would be glad to know if this problem comes from V2.3 / V2.4 specs compatibility or implementation issue
  • A bit offtopic but I would recommend for the new 0.9 tagging strategy (Unicode only, ID3V2.4) that DAP compatibility is assessed as other compatibility issues may arise.
Thanks to the developpers for their hard work.

  • ID3v2.4 introduced a new ID3v2 frame TDRC to store the year (instead of the ID3v2.3 TYER). foobar2000 0.8.3 only supports ID3v2.3 frames, so you can't see the DATE field there.
  • Seems that the current RC writes "comment" as description to the COMM frame by default. Please note, that the COMM frame is divided into a description and a comment field. Most applications only display the comment field of the frame so this is not a real problem.

I don't own a DAP by myself, but we've tested new tagging with the iRiver T10 and had no problems. You can also still use ID3v1 if you have compatibility issues.

No thanks .... ID3V1 has too much (size) limitations as you already know.
