Full Version: How do I determine sound card latency?

What is the correct procedure for determining the recording/playback latencies of my sound card? I ask as I've noticed delays when trying to manually create a chorus effect (playing the same part twice) and wish to rectify this problem.

My card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit, if that helps. I may try using the onboard sound instead and see if it's any faster, but I don't expect miracles.

Your replies are appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Sorry to say that Creative sound cards have some of the worst timing errors of all the sound cards out there.
I have seen heaps of people come to the audiomasters forum (an unofficial Adobe Audition users group) asking why they are having the same or similar problems as you describe, and it's always a Creative card that's involved.
If you want to multitrack reliably, you seriously need to invest in a decent sound card.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. sad.gif
Highly recommend you look at the ESI Juli@ card, the Echo cards are meant to be pretty good (never used 'em myself), and if you want to spend up big on some really nice gear, RME make some truly awesome sound cards.
Best of luck.

Thanks very much. Installing ASIO4ALL did seem to help a bit, although whether it'll stay that way remains to be seen! wink.gif

I'm getting a Line 6 TonePort UX2 soon which is an audio recording interface and boasts low latency, and will be using that as my input and output device since it will work for all my purposes. I've just been itching to record in the meantime so I was trying to make do with what I had! smile.gif

Thanks again!
