Hey there everyone!
I am working on my final year project at Uni and will be investigating the effects of using different compression algorithms on binaural recordings...therefore I am searching frantically for some binaural recordings in a pure audio format. I only need a couple of short samples, which I can then encode to different formats (i.e. mp3, AAC, etc) for the testing process.
I wondered if anyone knows of or has access to any such recordings in their original format? I have checked out a few sites i.e. Jimtreats etc but these are encoded as MPC files.....

Thanks in advance smile.gif

There are going to be very large differences between encoders of the same format (perhaps bigger than the differences between formats, since all modern audio codecs work largely the same).

ah yes I read somewhere how differently various encoders perform, I should possibly encode using a number of different encoders then for each format to obtain a good spread of results?

You can investigate if what I said holds (if you should look at encoder+format, or if just format is acceptable as an approximation).

How do you expect to quantify the results?

thats been racking my brain for a while.
My idea is to setup a room where the listener sits in the middle. On different positions of the wall will be numbers, each number representing an angle. The listener will be asked to point towards the place they believe the sound is coming from...
In terms of distance im thinking of something as simple as
A)inside my head
B)within arms reach
C)spitting distance
D)outside the room
(not my final choice of working haha)

the distance thing will be the hardest because without training someone how to judge distances its always going to be difficult....?

Binaural Material:

I have a massive archive and have been involbved in commercial recordings.

Binaural, although stunning on headphones, is a complex and difficult subject particularly in recordings and subject to a whole host of issues on playback, including head / ear / body shape of the listener.

I would welcome contact off list for further discussion through my website.

Best,

Dallas Simpson.
