Hi, all. I'm just wondering, with the conversion mentioned in the title, how much wuality do you think I'll lose (if any, but I imagine there will be some consdiering OGG is lossy).

I had originally changed some OGG encoded albums into Apple Lossless so that I could put them on my iPod without losing any quality (iPod doesn't support OGG sad.gif ). However, they take up alot of space on my hard drive and on the iPod it self and I'm trying to find a smaller alternative.

Thanks.

options:
1> abx some transcodes from vorbis to AAC (or MP3) and find out what is acceptable to you
2> use the rockbox firmware to use your original files

Rockbox and Vorbis on the iPod for the win!

OGG > Apple Lossles > M4A, Quality Loss

Only one of those describe the audio codec, so its hard to say.
If the Ogg files are encoded lossless (FLAC), then you will have no aditional loss when you transcode to Apple Lossless. But if they are encoded lossy (Vorbis), your Apple lossless files will only have the audio quality of the vorbis file but be noticable bigger in size.

Since you posted this is the AAC forum I suppose you want to transcode the files to AAC.
Then I have these final comments:
* If Ogg FLAC, go for it (you will have no additional loss, than going from a PCM files).
* If Ogg Vorbis, you have to ABX and see if you can live with the quality loss (cause you had loss when you encoded to Vorbis, and you will have aditional loss when you transcode to AAC).

Good luck!

i think it's fair to assume he was talking about "vorbis > ALAC > aac" but i guess you could be annoyed at him anyways.

Haha. Everyone's always annoyed at me fro some reason no matther where I go.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, sorry it took so long for me to get back on here. It's been a busy month or so.

Back to the topic, yes I was referring to Vorbis. Like I said, I had about 2 dozen albums in Vorbis that I wanted on the iPod without losing quality. I really don't want to change my iPod's firmware to RockBox (although I've heard nothing but good things about RB for a long time now), so my only alternative is to either find a way to change the encoding of the files or live with the massive ALAC sizes.

Perhaps there are some options for me with new ALAC encoder for dbPowerAmp?

Well even though ABX is the way to go...

... it finally depends on the listening environment you use your iPod in.

Like me. I use GSPlayer on iPaq2210 on the road. The rumble of the buses I take helpfully mask any artefacts... so I go for broke and use Vorbis -q 1 (GASP! tongue.gif ) Yes it is pathetically easy to ABX on my home PC but I have no quarrel to its quality on the road.

There goes. Don't flame me. Please. biggrin.gif

EDIT: Typo

Sorry then!
But your first post did not make any sense to me, since you totally mixed up codecs and containers. So I posted an answer which should be valid for all combinations... wink.gif
