"There is no difference between the output you get if you use "-V2" or "--alt-preset standard"."

First, if the LAME settings are "-V x" settings, why in CDEX are they called VBR Quality settings?

The -V settings are newer than, and supposed to the exact same thing as the Quality settings. ie. --alt-preset standard is -V 2. So how am I able to change either one to any setting without it changing the other? How does CDEX know which of the two settings to use?
Say I want -V 2, which is supposed to be --alt-preset standard, which has a certain -q setting, but I can still change the -q setting. Shouldn't Quality be greyed out? What should it be set to?

And same thing if I set the Quality instead, shouldn't it auto set the VBR quality (or grey it)?

BTW, if -V 2 is --preset standard and -V 2 --vbr-new is --preset fast standard, what uses VBR default and what's the difference in Default and the others? ie. What IS the Default setting? Is it the same as VBR Old? If so, why is there two of the same settings?

Quick Reponse: Make sure you have the latest Lame 3.97 libraries installed for CDEX and just stick with the -V x presets (or VBR quality settings). This is why I greatly prefer the command-line, when they start adding in technical stuff into the GUI's things can become really confusing. Read the page over again and set both of them, forgive me I haven't used CDEX to encode with Lame in a long time.

the difference between --vbr-new and --vbr-old is highlighted on the wiki page. Generally --vbr-new is recommended for the most part and it's faster.

Anyone else know?

Thank you but that isn't what I asked.

I'd rather not have to use an INI. And I'm not worried about all the extra settings I might be missing by using CDEX. I just want to know how it works now in CDEX, so I know I'm getting the settings I mentioned above.

I don't understand what you are asking for then? your wording is very confusing. Are you asking, what to configure for Lame encoder in the CDEX window? I don't think there is anything more to it, if you don't want to use a configuration file then just follow the wiki page. huh.gif. It's not as confusing as it looks.

Does anyone understand what I'm asking? I'm not sure how else to word it. Seems straight forward to me.
But I could try.

-q is for huffman coding (lossless compression) lower values make for more efficient but slower coding (if i'm off, correct me)

-V is the vbr quality, lower values are for higher bitrates (implies 'higher' quality)

my advice: just leave the -q switch alone (unless you are a tweak freak like me cool.gif )

if you want to use --preset fast standard, then USE --preset fast standard, there is no reason to do it with -V # --vbr-new instead unsure.gif
