I've been using the iTunes Lame encoder on my osx tiger system. This encoder came with the 3.96 version of Lame. I've downloaded the 3.97 version of lame but don't know how to install it so it will be availabe to the Lame encoder.
Can anyone post instructions?

Replace the lame binary inside the iTunes lame encoder package.
ctrl-click -> Show Package Contents, then look inside the Contents/Resources/ folder
