I set up EAC just as all the guides said to but I can't get the ripping speed to get above 10x.
I have a TSSTcorp TS-H352C and a Sony CRX-216E. I am using the Sony with EAC. Nero drive speed says it can go 48x but EAC will not rip CDs past 10x.
Any ideas?

10x in secure mode is a fairly quick.

Not when the dive can go 48x.
And besides, i only goes 10x at the very end. For the first half (which is like 8min) it goes 3-4x and then gradually makes its way up to 10x in the next 5-6 min.
I have like 25 CDs to rip tonight and would like it to get done a bit quicker.

I'm lucky if I get 1x in secure mode. EAC was not designed to be fast, if you don't want errors it's going to take more time. There are probably more technical explainations that I don't understand but that's the impression I get

I used to get around 25x right at the beginning of a rip, ending up around 30x at the end. I was pretty happy with that but don't know what happened.
Maybe my burner is dying out. I was ready to purchase a BenQ 1640 but then they pulled it from every where in preparation for the next version which has yet to be released.

I would look into the EAC forum/read the manual for information and understand how secure mode works. Its not supposed to go at 48x even if your drive has that as a maximum.
Its not going to be fast if you want it to be secure. Its either or in this case.
Good luck ripping.

why cant Magical_McGee select secure mode and set 48x in the Speed option (EAC->Drive Options->Offset/Speed) and also check the "Allow speed reduction" checkbox ? I'd imagine that will allow eac to start off at max speed and also let it reduce the speed to whatever it likes, IF it sees the need. Although there is not much you can do if even after that eac "decides" to reduce the speed to 0.9x (an example).

You cannot rip audio CDs in Secure mode at the drive's rated top speed for several reasons:
- The drive can only achieve its advertised top speed at the outer edge of the CD. The data at the inner edge (the CD's beginning) passes the laser pickup head much slower
- EAC has to do re-reads in Secure mode. Even one re-read means the speed cut in half
- Some drives may have poor DAE support, and as such they will never rip audio CDs nearly as fast as they read CD-ROMs (data).
- Most of the drives cache audio data. That's why in Secure mode EAC has to pass additional commands to the drive to force flushing the cache, which takes time and further slows down ripping.
One reason why M_M may have had such high speeds is that he had the Drive caches audio data mistakenly cleared. Or he may have been using Burst mode. Which he should be doing now anyway: Burst Mode with Test and Copy (Action menu > Test & Copy Selected Tracks). If the CRCs match, the rip is as good as Secure; of course, it will go faster. On tracks where the CRCs don't match, Secure mode can be used.
