Full Version: Removing Speaker Grilles

Hehe, I accidently just tore one of my speakers grilles in half.. so decided to remove it completely, along with the foam that covered the bass and mid cones.

I'm just wondering, how would that affect the output of the speaker? There's less in the way of me and the source of the sound, so would it be better? But I would of thought those things were put ther for a reason?

Protection of the vulnerable speakers themselves?

No idea what it will do to sound.

Removing the speaker grills doesn't necessary give better sound, but it does ensure that all the frequencies are there and have the correct "strenght"... Depending on the wavelenght/frequency of the sound and the grill size, some of the waves can bounce of the grill and shift one half of the wavelenght, thus creating an exact opposite which will "take out" the sound and cause certain frequencies to be silent for the listener in various angles... dry.gif tongue.gif

Edit: Not really shift... (Forget what I wrote... rolleyes.gif ) But the waves bounce the way so that they interfere with others... Very difficult (practially impossible) to even be able to hear it since the waves bounces of the walls and such too...

I actually wished this board software had a delete function... It could come in handy sometimes... laugh.gif

Hehe, I thought as much, I couldn't hear any difference between the speaker with and without the grille..

The nice difference is the speakers now look all manly, big black panels and chrome rims, it looks to my taste! biggrin.gif

Well I use Logitech Z-560s for my computer and I took the grills off when I got them and certainly noticed a difference. The highs were clearer than with the grills on so I've always kept them off. And it has the cool side effect of kind of looking better and smaller. biggrin.gif

Note - This wasn't a blind test but my the difference was surprisingly fairly obvious to me.
