Full Version: Wish: plug-in for id3v2.3 tag writing support

Hi smile.gif

First of all I would like to thank peter and all the developers for their great work on foobar2000 0.9.

But I can't use this version currently because id3v2.4 is not supported by my portable mp3 player and by my DVD player (both displaying garbage).
They only support id3v2.3 tags with ISO-8859-1 encoding, and there is no hope for a future firmware update, so I'm stuck with that.

Since I don't want to use another software to tag my mp3s, I keep using foobar 0.83 at the moment.

So I have two questions:

1. Is it technically possible to make a plugin adding id3v2.3 writing capability in fb2k 0.9 architecture? (with just an option to choose between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-16 encodings).

2. Is there a developer interested in coding such plugin? (maybe a port of the old foo_id3v2 plugin to fb2k 0.9)

I completely understand that the developers want a strict and robust id3v2.4 support by default, and I respect this decision, but I think many people like me will need a plugin with id3v2.3 support.

I'd be interested in a plugin that allows you to choose between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-16 encodings for the tags.

I also would like an option for ID3v2.3, but i have a related question.

What happened to the 'standard inputs' options from 0.8? You know, that page where you get to select between using APE and ID3 tags for MP3s. I can't seem to find it in 0.9. :/

Not sure if this is what you're asking for but if you right click a track, in the context menu you will see Tagging > MP3 tag types
lav-chan
No, that's close, but that's not it.

I mean the options that 0.8 had under 'Standard inputs' that determined what tag format foobar would use for MP3s by default. It said 'Tag type to write:' and had a drop-down list where you could choose between ID3v1, ID3v2, ID3v1+ID3v2, APEv2, APEv2+ID3v1, et cetera.

You can select both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags. You player should read ID3v1 tags.

You can choose tag types from the context menu: Tagging -> MP3 tags types.

I have posted this request in the general forum.
lav-chan
That just changes the tag types that already exist for the file, though. It doesn't set the format that foobar will use by default in the future. ... Right?
rosshmusic
it has been said that the tag type default page from .83 will will not be coming back in .9...

Yeah, that's why i have posted that request smile.gif

But afaik those won't be implemented in the nearest future.

Of course they read id3v1, but unlike id3v2.3 it only support 31 characters long titles and it doesn't support characters outside ANSI (like é è à etc.) so it’s not a viable option for me.

Yes that's why I wish someone write a PLUGIN to bring back this functionality if its possible. I know it's gone for good in the main program!

and id3v1 does not support custom genres.

it's hard enough to browse files on a portable device (40MB) with truely descriptive genres like hemi-sync. without ... sucks

my wish would be writing all tags (including lyrics, ....) to ape2 at the end of the file and only artist, album, title, genre to id3v2 tags at the beginning, so the available 'padding space' ist not exeeded by lyrics and comments (files dont have to be rewritten - as i believe, it's faster, disk does not fragment so much)

or if id3v2 would be at the end of the file i would forgett about ape....

another solution would be a plugin that copies files to a portable and converts tags on the fly, similar like the ipod plugin.

Why not? Is there at least a way to e.g. NEVER write id3v2 tags to files?

I'd be interested in a plugin that allows you to choose between ISO-8859-1 and UTF-16 encodings for the tags.

Yeah,a plugin with id3v2.3-support, and also ISO-8859 would be really nice.

After reading this forum for a while, it was drummed into me that Ape was good and nice, ID3v2 was vile and nasty. Now it seems everyone was wrong and I'm left with most of my mp3s with Ape tags, and the rest having to manually select the tag format they should use. Not very practical.

Everyone should have the option of which tagging format to use by default, so I'd love to see it return, through a plugin if necessary.
