Full Version: How To Lower Priority Of Dos-processes (e.g. Lame)

Well, I´ve got the following problem: I use "Monkey´s Audiocompressor" to generate in batch-processing MP3´s (around 1,000 sometimes). Now my problems:

a) Can I prevent Monkey (or any other frontend) from opening the DOS-encoding-window? - And if "yes" - how? Is there maybe any switch or something like this?

b) Can I lower down the process-priority of this DOS-calculation-process? In Monkey´s Audio it´s only possible to set the program-priority to "idle". But this parameter doesn´t seem to be given away to the DOS-program. So is this possible in any way? It´s because when the DOS-windows opens, it runs in "normal" priority, so some other processes, which I´d like to use in front of it (e.g. Internet-Explorer or Windows Commander are slown down tremendously). Maybe there exists a secret parameter-switch, which I don´t know.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I suggest this to solve your problem:

- Use RazorLame as a GUI for LAME instead of Monkey's Audio.
- To make up for the missing tagging feature, use Tag afterwards to tag all files in one go. Tag only supports ID3v1, but Monkey's Audio can't do any better either, so this method should be just as good.

RazorLame lets you configure the priority for LAME, and it doesn't open a console window (it has its own status display).

I can't remember if Monkey's Audio can load directories into the file list recursively, but if it can, you can use a primitive trick to do this with RazorLame: Use the Windows search function to search for *.wav files in the folder you want want to encode recursively, and drag them into the file list.

BTW: LAME is not a DOS program, it's actually a Windows program. It just doesn't have a fancy GUI, that's all. smile.gif

QUOTE
c:\start /?
Starts a separate window to run a specified program or command.

START ["title"] [/Dpath] [/I] [/MIN] [/MAX] [/SEPARATE | /SHARED]
     [/LOW | /NORMAL | /HIGH | /REALTIME | /ABOVENORMAL | /BELOWNORMAL]
     [/WAIT] [/B] [command/program]
     [parameters]

Start is a command you can execute from the command line prompt. It opens a new window which you can give a 'low priority'. You probably can't do anything with this in monkeys audio frontend, but you can in a batch file.
