Hi-- Here's a screenshot of my foobar set up; kind of plain, kind of boring, but it took me forever to figure out how to set it up like that so I'm kind of proud. dont laugh.

Anyway I am hoping to spice up my track info panel, ideally I would like a thumbnail of the Album art to go there, as well as some interesting and or additional information. Trying to learn how to script a little (if that's even the right word [string?]) but its slow going. Would anyone know how to do that? or know if theres a collection of different strings to create various set ups and looks for the Trackinfo panel? Here's what it looks like now:

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are there any very simple guides for installing themes such as these on Foobar 0.9.x?? I've tried searching the HydrogenAudio Wiki as well as many other places, and they either give outdated information and links which no longer work, or they're completely over my head.

I'm totally frustrated. You guys post codes and such for your customized themes, and I can't even find anything that tells me how to properly use them. Can someone throw me a link with proper up-to-date information?? I'm aware that there might allready be one in this thread, but I'm not going to read through 4000 posts to find it.

Here is my latest version - I am very happy with this simple/effective layout.
Everything loads quickly - runs smoothly - my goal for this layout was to get it easy and functional so that my gf could even use foobar to burn cd's and make her own playlists without requiring a lesson every time I updated my layout.

The correct way to do this, as with anything on your computer that you don't understand, is to download all the plugins that intrigue you (there is a centralized repository now, as well as the third-party plugin forums, so you should have plenty of places to look), look at all their configuration options, and play with it until you understand it.

Probably someone more gracious than me will give you a meaningless step-by-step method that will break and stop working in a few weeks or months once there is a new version of fb2k or the plugins in question. Then you can ask on the forums again for someone to guide you through it, and maybe you'll get lucky.

But the fact is, if you don't have the time or will to understand the application and figure things out for yourself, you will just run into difficulty after difficulty, and I almost guarantee you that your time would be better spent setting up one of the many other good media players like Winamp or iTunes.

I'm by no means an idiot, and I have no problems with learning new things. I actually took quite a stab at it on my own, and tried reading up before asking any questions. The problem is that there's all kinds of outdated misinformation out there, with dead links and links to old versions of plugins. I've allready wasted alot of my time because of this, and I still have no idea where to begin, or if the information I'm reading is even correct and relevant.

I've gotten so far as to learn how to install components. So far I've got:
LIBPNG & ZLIB Libraries (v128 & 123)
Columns UI 0.1.3 Beta1v6
Album Art 0.2.5.1
Album List 0.2.1 Beta4
Console Panel 0.2
Monkey's Audio Plugin 2.1.1
Track Info (not sure, but dated 10-24-06)

As far as I know, those are the most recent versions, but I could be wrong. I've got the libpng/zlib libraries in the Foobar2000 root directory, and the rest of the respective .dlls in the Foobar2000\components directory. They are all listed under Preferences\Components, but don't seem to be active.

I have no idea where to go from there. I see people listing codes for certain aspects of their custom themes, but I have no idea where those codes should be placed, nor would I know where to look to find correct information on how to write my own.
callisto
Do you have Columns UI activated? (simple question, but I think it could be the problem, that your .dll's are not active...just a suggestion^^)

It's seriously been like 6 months since i've even looked at foobar stuff, so i'm kind of 'rediscovering' everything. But i decided last night to finally sit down and try to get everything up-to-date, and, um, i suppose i did. So here's what i came up with in a few hours.

If it seems like they're "not active" I bet it's because you haven't placed them with the Columns UI layout. Columns UI can display the "panel" type components (like album art, console, track info, playlist) in any arrangement you like, or not show them at all; you have to go into Preferences / Display / Columns UI and look under the Layout tab. You'll see a pretty empty-looking tree view; right click and try adding some panels. ("Change the base" to a splitter, first - the configuration isn't exactly the most user-friendly or intuitive thing, but if you find the docs and play around with it you ought to be able to get a feel for it. Here's how mine looks.)

Most people posting code now are probably using the single-column playlist component and the code is going into the item display for that.

Thanks for your help. The components were "active" apparently, I just didn't know how to get them to display in the Foobar window. I downloaded the Single Column Playlist you suggested and got a very rudimentary layout going. It's not anywhere near where I want it yet, but I'm happy to be making progress at least.

My problem now is that when I see a layout I like (for example, this, this, and this), I have a hard time figuring out what components they used to achieve it. I sent a couple people messages, but none of them have yet responded. I also have trouble customizing some of the panels. For example, I tried the code from one of these Track Info panels, and had no idea how to change the colors for the fonts, etc.

Usually there are just maybe half a dozen components which are used frequently for visual things. Most people use:

- For the playlist, either the default columns UI playlist or single column playlist (the big difference is that SCP lets you have "headers" on top of each album, and lets you have better control over formatting, icons, different fonts, et cetera, for each track)

- To sort through their library, either foo_browser (an iTunes-like list of albums, genres, or artists), album list panel (you mentioned you had an album list component - the normal one is accessed via the menu, take a look at it, it's basically just a tree of artists/albums/tracks you can browse - there is also another component which is the same thing, but it's a panel version that you can place with columns UI.) or playlist tree (another tree view, but much more customizable.)

- To switch between playlists, either playlist tabs, which come with columns UI; playlist switcher, which comes with columns UI and is the one you're using, with one line for each of your playlists; or playlist dropdown, which is basically a little combo box dropdown menu you can choose a playlist from.

Then a smattering of other little things, like quicksearch toolbar, and album art panel, which you've clearly figured out.

Regarding your screenshots, the first configuration is using foo_browser to display the album and artist lists on the left and right, the normal columns playlist on the bottom, and a track info panel above the album art. The second one is using playlist switcher (I believe) at the top left, with a track info panel under it, and columns playlist on the right-hand side. The third one is using album list panel for the big tree on the left side, and columns playlist on the right.

Thanks for your help again mquander. I'll be playing around for a while and figuring stuff out, but I've got just a few more quick questions if you would be so kind.

How do I go about relocating the Play control buttons and the little equalizer visualization as many people have done?? Also, I'm messing around with the foo_browser you mentioned, and I was wondering if there was a way to have it navigate solely according to directory structure, rather than (what appears to be) ID3 tags.

Thanks again.

I don't know anything about foo_browser, so you're on your own there. Regarding the buttons and a few other things - those are for some reason "special" columns UI components classified as "toolbars." If you look in Preferences / Display / Columns UI under the "Main" tab there is a checkbox that says "Show toolbars;" if you uncheck that, you'll see them disappear from the top where they are by default.

Once you do that, though, you can replace them easily using the Columns UI layout tree. On the layout screen, if you right click and go to "Insert Panel" you will see a "Toolbars" category, and you can place the buttons, menu, and whatever else wherever you like, just as if they were panels. (The spectrum analyzer is in the "visualizations" category on that menu.)

yes exactly. i still didnt figure out how. unsure.gif
this is what i'll try to achieve. i'll try as soon as i find the way to embed album art in column UI.. or is it with single column playlist?

one more thing i'm not sure about. is it possible to use an image as a background for the tracklist and empty sections?

It's with single-column playlist, and you can draw a background on using exactly the same technique.

I'm tempted to make that at some point, as that is fucking HOT.

Some issues before I'd start:

- Got cut up images?
- Background image tileable?
