I just got a Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S to archive some of my music on DVD's (I can handle DC-R archiving smoothly), but I don't know wich file system to choose, ISO?, UDF?, physical partition?, virtual partition?, should I use double-layer discs? huh.gif

Any help is appreciated!

I can't answer on filesystem, I just use the default Nero gives me.

However, I see no point in using dual-layer discs. They cost ten times as much and give you twice as much space. They should currently generally be used for backing up DVD-9 without having to recompress.

I think PAR2 is a sensible move. I create a PAR2 set for each lossless image file, but I think a more sensible approach is to create PAR2 from the disc image. There are some links in the wiki article, including one to dvdisaster, which looks interesting to me. You may do better sticking with the well known PAR2 though (or ignoring this paragraph if you so wish).

I was always wondering why dual-layer discs are so expensive. I can't believe it's cost of technology issue. Anybody has a clue?

A plot by the movie industry to prevent people from copying losslessly DVD's

I would have dismissed this as "conspiracy theory" a while back, but seeing how the cost of dual layer DVD's has not come down, I must agree

Actually DVD-DL are so expensive because of large defect rejections at the factory. From what I've read around the internet, it is much harder to manufacture dual layer discs than single layer. Hence the price difference. From my experience, it is also much harder to find decent dual layer discs. Verbatim is the only brand I've had any success with. Otherwise they aren't really worth the hassle.

ISO?, UDF?

If you care about features (huge or numerous files, long paths or filenames, etc.), use UDF. If you care about compatibility, use ISO.

How many GBs are we talking about?

An external hard drive might be a good choice.

I have been archiving my FLACs to DVD and I lost two of them to unreadable sectors.

Good I still have those CDs, but next time I might not be so lucky.

Right now it's about 30GB of lossy music and another 25GB of WavPack images, I would like for the mp3's to be playable on capable DVD players, but the WV images are only for backup purposes.
