I do work for a company in the Bay Area that creates firmware for digital TV sets. We are currently adding multilanguage support and are having trouble finding someone to help get our English setup strings translated into usable Spanish strings. By usable I mean understandable, but still short enough to fit in the provided box; for example for "TV Rating" we got "Clasificación de programa", and I'm sure there's something shorter that would be acceptable (abbreviations, etc.)

If you think you can help with this (and I'm sure there's a bilingual techie here somewhere!) please PM me. If you happen to live in the Bay Area that would be great, but anywhere is fine as long as you know Mexican Spanish (that's the market). I don't think that this is a lot of work, and we hope to find someone who might find it interesting enough to do without compensation (but I'm sure I can talk management into some PayPal money if it works out).

I would say "Si lo necesitas, también te puedo ayudar" . But these are small differences between variants of spanish. Spanish from Argentina or spanish from Spain. Mind that spanish from Mexico will have its own small differences, so best would be somebody from Mexico reviewed the translation.

Alright guys, thanks for the offer of help! Here are the strings that need translation. In the cases where there's a Spanish string the problem is that it's too long. If we could come up with something the same size as the English string that would be ideal, but maybe something a little longer might fit. It's alright to have several and we'll use the longest one that fits.

Some strings have no Spanish translation yet at all. For those it would nice to have a couple different lengths as well.

If this goes well maybe I can get everyone a new flatpanel digital TV with really nice menus! Hmm, maybe not. Perhaps a one-time gift to HA would be in order...

"Definir" is better understood and more widely used than "fijar" in Mexico. "Predeterminado/a", "ingresar" and "reiniciar" are also very common and easily understood.

"Clase de película" and "Clase de programa" mean "type of movie" and "type of show" in México, I don't think that's what they are going for.

Clase and tipo are used for pretty much the same thing here in México, like:
- Que tipo de carro manejas? / Que clase de carro manejas?
- Que tipo tipo de peliculas te gustan? / Que clase de peliculas te gustan?

But neither Clase nor Tipo can be used successfuly for TV/movie ratings IMO.

EDIT: But living on the border with the US, I must say we (as in my local region) use a lot of language modifications influenced by the english language.

If I'm asked that I'd answer the genre, i.e. drama, horror, action, fantasy, etc.
Clasificación should be clear enough for TV and movies.

Genero would be much better thatn clasificacion.

"System time not properly set"

"Access MENU to set time"

Hopefully those two can be no longer than the original English.

And finally, what would be a good string for "PILLAR BOX"? I had actually never heard of this before working for a TV company, but it refers to a scaling mode where a 4:3 picture is displayed on a 16:9 screen with black stripes on the side (kind of the opposite of letterbox, which is translated as "MODO DE CARTA"). Perhaps I just need the translation for "pillar" or "column" (as in architecture).

"Hora del sistema no configurada" or "Tiempo del sistema no configurado" or possibly "Reloj del sistema no configurado", the last one means "System clock not configured". Translating "properly" directly would make the phrases longer, "Hora del sistema no configurada apropiadamente" etc.

"Access MENU to set time":
"Accesar MENU para configurar hora (or "tiempo" or "reloj")"

I had never heard of Pillar Box, everyone I know uses the terms Widescreen and Fullscreen in english, even DVD's sold here say widescreen. I can't think of translation right now.

A pillar box is what old British post boxes used to be called; they were shaped like pillars. A kind of pun on letter box, I think.
