"RIAA lawsuits have created a stir on college campuses nationwide, though many students have simply turned to private, LAN-based sharing. Applications like Direct Connect (DC++), MyTunes and OurTunes are often used to swap files within campus LANs, giving students shelter from the larger internet. Now, the RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) have taken some action to address the matter by sending letters to 45 university presidents across 25 states. "The perceived security and privacy of these campus LANs give many students incentive to engage in activity they have otherwise learned is illegal and unacceptable," a joint release from the groups asserted. The letters are urging the presidents to take "immediate action to stop and prevent theft by such means".

Legal action has not been taken, though RIAA president Cary Sherman pointed to a stepped-up effort this year. "As we prioritize our focus on campus LAN piracy in the coming year, we hope administrators will take this opportunity to fully evaluate their systems and take action to stop theft by all means," he said. Meanwhile, MPAA chairman Dan Glickman pointed to a strategy that involves information-sharing and education. "We are working to provide as much information as we can to help make those efforts effective, and to stay on top of emerging trends in intellectual property theft," he said. "Providing information about LAN systems serves to raise awareness and encourage action." The trade groups pointed to the availability of blocking and filtering mechanisms to curb the problem."

"1) public P2P networks
2) local P2P networks (schools)

whats next? family homes? RIAA and MPAA have too much time on their hands."

"Next they will be looking for the powers to police these networks to make sure that everything is to thier liking. Private networks will be policed using TPM in future with them controlling access to media remotely using arbitration under trust computing. Next in the future when all this is rolled out you will need to be trusted to connect to the internet (your ISP will use it to make sure only one person uses your cable modem etc), so goodbye opensource."

My response:

Here we see the ruthless hellbent stampede to decimate technology, and cockblock the entire Internet. Unless We The People can stop this furious rampage of government sponsored propaganda and economic/domestic terrorism being perpetrated by the MAFIAA, in 5 years from now, you'll be logging onto the Internet with a thumb and retinal scan from your PC in your home, routers will be illegal, and noone will get public IP's, as they will be pre-NAT'd at the ISP level, eliminating your possibility of you running a server, ever (its happening now). At this point I wouldn't be suprised if there's more pandering now to make it illegal to make open source software, forcing you to be licensed and "approved" by the US Guvmint. Couple this with a few highlights of the forthcoming DMCA 2.0 bill proposal.

"• Permits wiretaps in investigations of copyright crimes, trade secret theft and economic espionage. It would establish a new copyright unit inside the FBI and budgets $20 million on topics including creating "advanced tools of forensic science to investigate" copyright crimes.

• Amends existing law to permit criminal enforcement of copyright violations even if the work was not registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.

• Creates CIVIL ASSET FORFEITURE penalties for anything used in copyright piracy. COMPUTERS OR OTHER EQUIPMENT SEIZED MUST BE "DESTROYED" or otherwise disposed of, for instance at a government auction. Criminal asset forfeiture will be done FOLLOWING THE RULES ESTABLISHED BY FEDERAL DRUG LAWS. (caps emphasis mine).

If you haven't woke up yet, you have now.

so let me get this straight. this law bans internet radio stations that don't use DRM formats? or is it only mp3. if it's only mp3, nothing to worry about. you have multiple other formats to choose from.

Welcome to DRM hell in other words.
Time to support unsigned artists whom use open source audio formats?
