Full Version: Will there be a directshow filter for MPC?

Hello!

I like to transcode my DVD discs using DivX and ogg vorbis.

But to get best quality of sound, I want to ask if it is possible that the developers build up a direct show filter.

thank you for your answers

do not transcode the ac3-audio.

I donīt thing MusePack is a good choice for movies, because it has a quite high bitrate, so you need to do a 2CD-rip anyway, so you can also keep the original ac3 whichout losing much vdieo quality and the not transcoded ac3 from DVD has (of course) ideticall quality to teh DVD, you wonīt lose any audio-quality at all.

But that doesnīt change the thing that a DirectShow-Filter for MusePack would be great.

but for AC3, I also need a directshow filter, don't I? can you please give me a link?

These filters are not free software and very crappy. I always use AC3Filter:
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net
Itīs open-source, works very good, even with S/PDIF out. Never had problems with it.

Hm interesting, i will take a look at that. Couldn't complain about the "standard" doom9 filter, either...

i like this one as well. has allot of functional items. took me a while to get everything figured out but have had good success with it as well as good quality. i used it as a stand alone to listen to audio ac3. used the ac3machine to create the ac3 stream. intended to convert 2 channel wav file to ac3 wave then burn to cd. have not had time to finish

Hello.
Well, one important question hasn't been answered, will there be a directshow filter?! biggrin.gif
I'm sure there will be.. The real question is when?
I know i know, "when it's ready it'll be availible", my answer to this kind of answers is "no s@$#!" biggrin.gif...
I just think it would be nice to know if there's any work currently on one, and if yes, how it's going, and -approximately- (1, 2, 3 months) when will it be availible?
I'd love to convert my American Beauty DVD to an XviD + MPC OGM file... (oh yeah, i can feel the coolness of such a thing now!!)

(edit-replaced "plugin" with "filter", too much Winamp smile.gif..)

Tha main question is 'how will be the hero', IMO.
So start recruiting programers with appropriate skill and huge amount of free time right now. smile.gif

@ Citay:

The audiofilters.zip file from doom9 only allows stereo output doesn't it? The ac3 Filter from Sourcefourge has many more options (dynamic range compression, gain levels for each channel, etc...).

Another question: what is the legal status of the AC3 filter? Don't ac3 decoders need to be lisenced by Dolby Labs?

Moonlight Odio Dekoda can dekode 5.1 AC3, iirc. You can get it from Elecard.com, but be warned: IT MIGHT FUCK THINGS SERIOUSLY UP!!

The normal install also installs a DShow filter for MP3 (which IMO is better than the default from MS as it shows you the bitrate and type of the audio) that you might not want to install. In that case, you need to install the codecs from the .zip file manually with the command "regsvr32.exe /s <file.dll>". If you later find that it has fucked something up, then "regsvr32.exe /u <file.dll>" will get rid of the codec (but might not fix the problem... Directshow is somewhat sucky in that respect). You might also want to take a look at Graphedit (it's great for finding out what codecs are used when playing a file) which you can get from Doom9's software page.

Edit: stupid errors in the commands... D'OH!

These are just InterVideo AC3 decoder and filter that allows you to direct AC3 stream from avi to that decoder.
So if you have some DVD player already installed, only the latter filter needed to play avis with AC3 inside.
And I belive InterVideo decoder has all the capabilities commercial decoder should have (DRC, effects, 5.1 output), but it can't beat AC3Filter in some aspects anyway. smile.gif

BTW Valex, AC3filter's author, has also Winamp plugin based on the same engine as his great filter.

I heard ChrisHJW talking about an MPC DShow Filter in combination with ex-MCF. Since Frank Klemm helps developing Matroska DShow support seems possible as soon as SV8 and/or Matroska are ready.

As there is nothing existing yet and we want MPC as an alternative for video encoding where sound is important ( like musicals or music videos ) we were looking at this.

Currently development is stopped, as Frank was pointing out that its a mess to put SV7 into matroska, so we wait patiently for SV8. Frank wants to code a lossless SV7 to SV8 converter also, so a matroska MPC muxing tool would include this converter when muxing SV7 into matroska.

For the Dshow filter we could either

- make a general use MPC Dshow filter and call it from matroska parser ( doesnt fit well into matroska framework )

- hardcode MPC decoding into matroska parser until UCI or any other codec plugin system is available ( interims solution )

- call the MPC decoder via such plugin system later, outputting raw decoded PCM to audio renderer ( preferred way )

Definitely, MPC is one of the first codec I want to have in matroska (along with PCM, MP3 and Vorbis).
