Are there any utilities to check or troubleshoot Kernel Streaming and WDM if they are working correctly or not ? I think I maybe having a problem with these.

If Windows ME supports KS then I am expecting Foobar to list KS as an option in the output list alongwith wavout and directsound, but it does not. Its not available.
I have never had success using RMAA with the WDM driver option enabled. The latest soundcard drivers are WDM but I cant tell for sure if its using them or not.

Is there an update/patch that I may be missing and need to download and install ? How would I know though ? Any help appreciated! Thanks!

ME sucks, just move up to at least 2k already.

ok agreed but what can I do in the meantime ? There is a whole big hardware+software upgrade plan but its not going to happen anytime soon.

I have ME on my machine here, seeing that I despise XP with a passion and I can't use the command-line as easy, and appears that Foobar2000 isn't listing Kernel Streaming under here either.

Don't you have to download the kernel streaming compnent?

HotshotGG: why not try out Windows 2000? You get all the benefits of NT, and not have to deal with XP's extra garbage.
Or just use nLite with XP, strip away all the fluff.

In any case, fluffy might be right, it might not be showing simply because you didn't install the component. (I don't use it myself since it causes BSODs with the MIDI plugin...)

I'd imagine it comes packaged in the latest version of fb2k and get installed just like it did on my work pc which is win2k.
Anyway, I downloaded it and moved it to the "components" folder but fb2k threw this error immediately after it loaded -

ERROR (CORE) : Failed to load DLL: foo_out_ks.dll, reason: Wrong version number; this component appears to have been built with newer version of foobar2000 SDK, please download latest version of foobar2000 in order to use it.

probably because my fb2k version on winME is v0.8.3 and this latest component is meant for 0.9.x and 0.9.x is only for win2k

Eh, I am still stuck with ME also - as a starving student I tried but failed back in Sep 2001 to convince my headstrong dad to wait 1-2 months so as to have the Dell preloaded with XP. Now I'm in grad school, still starving, and still in the market for a free upgrade!

Strictly from a user perspective, it's rather grating that ME was released after Win 2000 but can't run so much new stuff.

It would be extra nice, in the case of programmes that would run on 9x with minimal adjustment, for developers to have 9x builds available. For example, though Skype 2.x lists 2000/XP as minimum requirements, it actually installs and works (unsupported) on 9x. I realise how awful 9x's technical shortcomings are, but not everyone has the resources (e.g. at work) to run something better.

And how ironic that "euphonic" approximates "goodsound" in meaning, we both registered here early this year, and we're similarly OS-challenged! (but are different people, believe me)

edit: it's miraculous enough that Foobar 0.8 works on Win 9x, and trying to use something snazzy like Kernel Streaming strikes me as asking a bit much...

edit2: if the unicode problem could be worked around with minimal fuss, it would be splendid to be able to play with Nero's new AAC command-line encoder - or, if not, at least as a courtesy to have it on http://www.nero.com/nerodigital/eng/Nero_Digital_Audio.html that it runs on NT-based OSs only - as a number of us took the trouble to download yet not run it.

Windows ME AND on the internet...now that's brave.

Seriously though, if one stays away from IE, is the security situation really that bad for a reasonably-patched 9x system? Important to know because this July, MS kisses 9x patches goodbye, sending us eternal preteens out into the world, and I wouldn't want my machine to be forced into a rogue army of 9x-bots hijacked to take over the world...

Sorry to bump the thread, but this point has me a little paranoid (and there seem to be other users of Win9x here); perhaps someone better versed in OS security could weigh in on how dangerous using the internet on Win ME (on Firefox) really is?

Huh? I was using ME up until early January and never had a single virus or any other problems (nonrelated to the normal flakiness of the system that is). Every year or less I would do a format and reinstall of Windows ME with all the patches. Even before I had that computer behind a router it was running for three months directly into my cable modem with no firewall running...just Norton's Antivirus (2002). This of course assumes people know enough to constantly keep their AV running while browsing even with Firefox and that they otherwise take caution in the kinds of sites they go to. Even hitting a few of the seedier sides of the web everything was caught by Nortons and I remained uninfected the entire time I had that computer (August 2001 - December 2005).

Norton's a terrible AV program. You may wanna switch to something better, like AVG or ClamWin.

One word - ZoneAlarm.

There is nothing brave, or not, about it. Just some common sense.

Apply all WinME patches. Lock down all ports in the firewall. Enable cookies for only selected sites. And ofcourse run the AV and AS frequently.
