I need suggestions on buying a new recording card. Most of my experience is with the M-Audio Delta 1010. Right now that is what I'm leaning towards but if anyone has any suggestions for another card with at least 8 ins/4 outs, I'd like to hear them.

I'd go Firewire possibles include

MOTU Traveller
MOTU 828 MKII
RME Fireface
Echo Audiofire8
Focusrite Saffire Pro 26io (when it is released)
Tascam FW1804 (Much cheaper if you live with 8in 2out in the analogue domain)

I've heard bad things about the build quality of the Makie Onyx 400F so I'd avoid that.

Much of the choice depends on if you need GSIF or just ASIO or WDM. It also depends on if you are using a Mac or a Windows PC. Finally it depends on if you need integrated mic preamps and if so what quality.

What type of recording do you plan on doing? Is it going to require a MIDI controller? if that's the case then I would say your on the right track. If you are going to use ASIO 2.0 then most certainly. Looking into Firewire wouldn't be a bad idea either, as was mentioned.

It will be PC based. I don't need the mic preamps, just straight line ins. I will need midi in/out, but if I absolutely have to I could work around that.

Right if you don't need mic pres then you can go for something like an Edirol FA101 that will give you 8in analogue ins and 8 analogue outs and MIDI ands is substantially cheaper than the interfaces I sugested in my previous post. It will also give you two mic pres on two of the channels but it's very hard to buy something which doesn't have at least two mic pre's in it these days.

That looks good, but from what I've been able to find online, it still looks like the 1010 is going to be the best buy as it can be had for ~$250 used.
