Is it likely that an option will be added to foobar2000 so that the user has a choice as to whether they wish to write ID3v2.3 or v2.4 tags? I would find this quite useful as a lot of hardware MP3 players only support v2.3.

I believe that the tagging software ID3Tag-IT has this option, although I now use mp3tag, which only supports v2.3.

Please search the forum before asking your question, this topic has already been discussed many times. The general position of the community seems to be that v2.4 has been around for so long that the development wants to push people to upgrade instead of adding backward compatibility with v2.3.

I do not agree with this position but I'm just a random end user. If you feel strongly about v2.3 backward compatibility I would suggest you argue your position in one of the main threads devoted to the topic.

I was having a bit of search and mostly noticed questions regarding people unable to read tags in foobar or itunes, but didn't seem to be entirely related to this.

Thanks for the answer though. I only wonder what it means when I Replaygain my (v2.3 tagged) mp3s in foobar now then - will I have both v2.3 and v2.4 tags? I always do all of my tagging in mp3tag (which only supports v2.3) so I wonder what adding replagain info from foobar will do?

It partially strips the v2.3 tags, thats just apparently though, I RGed with 0.8.3.

I will have to have a play with tagging between mp3tag and fb2k... and also take a look at the differences between v2.3 and v2.4 to see if it is going to cause me any problems (as well as testing on my mp3 player).

The recent beta versions of mp3tag DO HAVE v2.4 support

Hmm, removed all tags from one of my mp3s and opened in foobar. Then tagged the file with ID3v1 and 2, and it didn't seem to make any differences to how tagging was done in the old foobar, which is good I guess. Winamp v5.21 and mp3tag v2.35 could read the tags just fine. Also looking at the file in UltraEdit the tags look the same as well. So, whatever changes are in ID3v2.4 didn't seem to affect me at all...
