My primary use for the soundcard would be to play FLAC's on my music player and then pipe out the audio through a hi-fi USB connection to my stereo. Presently, I have a generic built in soundcard on my computer, and was wondering if quality wise it would make a difference to buy a soundcard. If so, what should I look for in a sound card?

almost any soundcard you buy will be better than onboard. except mainboards with VIA Envy soundchip, but they are or can be expensive.
but...who am I to talk...Croatia is pretty poor computer market.

You could go for a USB soundcard, I have a Audigy 2 NX USB sound device and it is great for recording audio.
