Full Version: One more Lossless Audio Codecs comparison page
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossless Audio Compression > Lossless / Other Codecs
Josef Pohm
On Synthetic Soul website there's a new page about lossless codecs comparison. Results are derived from some of my personal test sessions, while the system used to show them is the well known application developed by Synthetic Soul himself for his own data.

The primary objective is to compare a large variety of lossless audio codecs. The comparison includes alternate versions, obsolete codecs and general purpose compressors with audio specific optimizations.

Here's the link.

Can you both put in last update date in the pages? I'm putting your results in the HA wiki here and would like to sort based on last update date.

Oh, and also same request for all link-providers in the same section.

Thankieee.

The page is excellent, but there's a concern that could affect the results quite drastically: the processor core and instruction sets it supports.
A single-core processor at about 3.2 GHz and with SSE3 support would yield much more representative results, given the fact that encoders could be optimised for a specific instruction set (like Lancer for SSE3). Besides, 1.5 GHz Tualatin is just too old for testing lossless codecs.

That's just a nitpick though, you can ignore it.

You mean SSE2, rather than SSE3? (SSE3 is not on the AMD chips, just latest intel), plus I think the optomizations between SSE3 and SSE2 is small.

Actually, I think the Athlon64 does have support for SSE3 (but that's besides the point).

Josef sent me a new DB today, so I took the opportunity to add some "Last Updated" text. Josef's was last updated today; mine was the 27th, with the new Yalac encoder (0.07).

NB: Mine is really just for the Yalac testing though. Josef's is really the only candidate for a comprehensive lossless codec comparison. Mine also suffers from IO issues distorting results.

I need to improve the system so that you can filter the results better . He has so many it doesn't do the data justice at the moment.
