Full Version: 2nd Gen iPod Nano Wish List

The rumors are flying that a new Nano release is imminent. So what would HA members like to see in the 2nd gen? Prediction: no less than 10 smart-***es will reply "no new Nano" or "the end of Apple".

For me:

1. 8 GB flash memory version at $249, 4 GB at $199, and 2GB at $149
2. Fix the LAME V2 stuttering problem as was done in the iPod Video
3. Metal finish in a variety of colors similar to the iPod Mini rather than high gloss scratchable plastic
4. The "gold" sound standard of the Shuffle, as was placed in the iPod Video
5. Screen greater % of the real estate on the front

That's it for me. I'm happy with everything else about the Nano and the Nike partnership is truly awesome for an avid fitness person.

Gapless playback of AAC and LAME MP3.

Improved battery life

Well I'd love for them to add gapless playback and fix stuttering on high bitrate lame files, but...... since I know that's not going to happen, I'd agree that higher capacity for cheaper price plus better battery life will be nice. Also, that they don't radically change the architecture in such a way that it takes forever for the ipl or rockbox people to figure everything out.

As for your point about "gold sound standard of the Shuffle" uhmm... what the hell? If I was a nazi I might mention something about TOS#8. Instead I'll just repeat.... what the hell??

1. 10GB for $249, with a reduction of $20 for every 2GB less (8GB at $229, atc). 1GB flash drives can be had for ~$30 already, and with Apple's buying power of the NAND memory, they should be able to put out that kind of prices.
2. I don't think it's possible to have metal finish, as it might require the nano to be thicker, which I don't think Apple would like. However, do make a more durable coating. Maybe matte finish like the black macbook.
3. Definitely better battery life. At least 20 hour per charge for Audio. Hopefully it would be possible on whatever new chip Apple will be using.

Expecting gapless on iPod out of the box from Apple will be just a dream. It will never happen, since none of the competitors even bother (maybe Sony, but Atrac only). Even iTunes cannot play MP3/AAC gaplessly.

1. Complete published specs to make sure the Rockbox port goes smoothly. laugh.gif

Full ack. But since I recently got my iPod 5g 30GB it'd be senseless to buy a nano.

Gapless is the main thing I'd like to see improved too.

By the way, I don't think it's very unlikely that they introduce it, the pressure won't come from competitors but from the Record Labels. If only Madonna had insisted (I can picture her doing it now) on having her last album delivered as gapless through iTMS we could have already had it. The reason iTunes won't do it is because the iPod can't, it would look stupid. If they'd introduce it simultaneously on iTunes/Quicktime and iPod it can be done.

Line-in recording to 44Khz/16bit WAV and AAC (the latter is not necessary)

Is this (hydrogenaudio) the best forum for ipod discussion or www.ilounge.com? (I don't own ipod yet and still doing research so still trying to figure out which places on the web has the most intelligent talk on this.)

Now why in the name of capitalism would Apple go and lower prices if iPods are selling just fine at current prices?

When you buy an iPod most of your money goes to feeding their mass-marketing beast, not flash memory.

Scratch Resistance. Better battery time. 2, 4 and 8GB sizes at the same prices that the 1, 2 and 4GB are priced today.

Almost forgot the most important one: Fully customizable equalizer!
Jojo
- At least a 10GB version
- full aluminum body
- gapless playback
- equalizer

I think you guys are searching for a product that will more likely be made by a different company.

Is this pie-in-the-sky business really applicable to this forum, or do you think the Apple marketing department is busily taking notes?

But since we're at it, is someone working on a Windows version of ChapterTool? If not, why not?

This is called a "wish list," isn't it? smile.gif Looking at Sandisk, price per GB is getting lower than the nano, so it's not unlikely that Apple will go aggressive in pricing just to corner more marketshare from Sandisk.

I'd add support for MP4 chapters, but it's maybe already supported. Could someone enlight me on this subject?
neomoe
it is already supporte for audiobooks (m4b) I believe. the problem. there does not seem to be any free tool to apply those chapters to a file rofl
Canar
The end of Apple. tongue.gif Just kidding.

A way to have the iPod use tags and/or folder structure for metadata like foobar instead of using iTunesDB would be nice. Being able to access all your files like a hard drive is quite handy, and would eliminate the need for silly loader applications. Support for the file-as-album concept would also be fun.
BuriaN
-10 Gb or 8 Gb
-longer battery life (energy save mode? with 2 colors)
-built in flac support (rockbox is ok, but..)
vinnie97
With a 6GB flash player from Sandisk and perhaps a few others...8 seems entirely possible.

QUOTE
- a fast rockbox-devellopment

Not likely unless Apple cooperates and forwards pertinent info to some of the Rockbox devs (including a unit to test). wink.gif And that is even less likely to happen.

When they have their own lossless format to thwart upon us? Not a chance in hell...

Vorbis support! laugh.gif

<< sigh, I'm a helpless Vorbis-addict :look: >>

I'm all for that, as fruitless as the chances of it happening are.
