Hello all!
There is a strange request I know, but I have a program that plays only one channel audio (either left channel or right channel) at a time. THe reason for this is because the program's wav files have two *different* lines of speech stored within a single .wav file, one line on the left channel (in CoolEdit this appears as the top part wave) and the other on the right channel (in CoolEdit this appears as the bottom part wave). When I play the .wav file normally in say foobar, both channels play simultaneously and so i hear two differnt lines of speech at once. Now, I was wondering if I can somehow configure my speakers?/soundcard? so that ALL speakers play either only left channel audio or only right channel audio at a single time. Maybe there is a program that allows for such a configuration?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

You can select just one channel in Cool Edit and save it as mono WAV (save selection). There might also be a simple commandline tool on rarewares.org which extracts the channels to two WAVs seperately (not sure though). A mono file usually gets played on both speakers.

thanks for the reply Sebastian but that is not what i'm after...i need the file to still be stored as a single wav but i need to have only one channel within the .wav play through ALL speakers at once...right now, both channels are playing simultaneously and each channel contains a different line of speech

In CoolEdit:
Options/Settings/Devices/Limit Playback to Mono
Open file in Single Waveform View
Select the channel you want to play, play it
It will now play back through both channels

thank you for the reply, but this still does not help me. Maybe my explanation is not clear enough. THe program that this wav file plays in will output only audio from the right channel or the only from the left channel at one particular time. However, within the program, i can still hear both the left channel and right channel audio (lines of speech) coming simulataneously. However, if i could setup my speakers/sound card? so that all speakers play only one channel of audio at a time when the .wav file is played, then i will hear only the left channel or right channel line of speech when the program plays the wav file.

The 'player program' should be delivering the output from the single, selected channel defined as mono. In that way, it will be treated as any other mono source and will play through both speakers.

- You want to mute the left channel and then upmix the right channel to stereo.
- You want to mute the right channel and then upmix the left channel to stereo.
You want your program to switch between the two modes mentioned above. Am I correct?

Yeah, you basically are correct, but I have no idea how to do that?? RIght now, I'm trying to define a hotkey that will adjust the CD Audio Balance slider in the Windows Mixer to the left or the right, but I'm not having much luck so far...

You have somehow not read, or implemented, my instructions correctly. If you look again, you will see that you select only one channel to play. It is thus impossible to hear both channels at once. Only one is playing. This solves part of your problem, but this alone will just play that one channel out of one speaker; nothing comes from the other speaker.
Setting up mono playback in the Devices setting results in that one channel playing through both channels. You get identical audio from both speakers.

In spite of the anyone wanting to ignore them, the instructions I gave for playing in CoolEdit do indeed correctly play only one channel at a time into both speakers. You get to select which channel.
