What are some really useful plugins? So far i have just installed the Columbsiu, album art, lyrics plugins.
Are there others i should get? thanks in advance.

Trackinfo, foo_infobox, foo_freedb2 and foo_lyricdb are essential to me. If your foobar machine is connected to the internet try out foosic and audioscrobbler, really interesting plugins. Check out this thread for the (almost) complete list of available plugins. If you prefer eye-candy the foobar appearence threads (12) can give you some inspiration
And welcome to foobar, the best player around. You've made a wise decision...

You probably should look into foo_uie_trackinfo it is a very useful and mature component but how you use your foobar is really up to you. I personally would also reccomend foo_browser and foo_uie_tabs but there are many different ways to build foobar. I'd suggest looking through the gallery and browse the 3rd party plugins section of the forum to see how people are using the different components. If you want a visualization plugin, I think ProjectM is the only real option out there.

I would hardly call a component mature that might needlessly use up a large amount of CPU time with the wrong settings, much less when the default settings happen to be such wrong settings.

Yep, it became pretty buggy lately, seems like the one who ported to 0.9 (and added some features which introduced the bugs) does not have that much time...
