Full Version: Editing custom FLAC tags with drop-down value lists?

I'm setting up some custom native FLAC tags, some of which would have a list of possible values, like Genre typically has. This is mostly for DJ purposes, so one example would be classifying the groove for a track. The best way I can think of so far would be to refer to tracks I already have in my head, to bring up a list of more obsure tracks that would fit. In this case the list would be a bunch of song names, which would require a lot of typing or cut-and-paste. Rather than type in the values, it would be great if I could pick values from a drop-down list, and be able to manage that list.

MediaMonkey has the drop-down list feature--and automatically builds that list from values already used, which is great--but it only seems to allow for three custom fields, which wouldn't be enough for me. Foobar allows you to enter any tag name and any value, but only by typing them in, so far as I can see. Is there some software that would let me set up drop-down lists for a larger number of custom tags? Freeware would be great, of course, but I'll spend a few bucks if necessary.

Thanks,
Drew

You must be looking for Helium Music Manager - and the feature of which i hate it mostly for!

Hi odyssey,

I'm taking a look at Helium. It does have great tag-editing features, with drop-down lists and a whole lot of tag fields, including some useful ones that MediaMonkey doesn't have. The tags it supports cover pretty much all the tags I need drop-down lists for. I could use the Tempo tag as my Groove tag, for example. However, it doesn't seem to allow adding custom tags beyond it's built-in set.

I'd still like to maintain a few custom tag fields, though the ones I can think of would be simple numeric ratings for various characteristics, like how well a track would work for particular dance styles (there can be a lot of overlap). These tags wouldn't need to have drop-down menus. I could maintain these custom fields in Foobar, though it's a little cumbersome.

It would be great to have a spreadsheet-style tag editor that can deal with a few custom fields. Even if this editor doesn't do drop-down lists, it could work as a complement to Helium or something like that. Of course, it would be better still to have one tag editor that would support drop-down lists and custom fields.

Anyone have any more suggestions?

Thanks,
Drew

J. River Media Center has a spreadsheet style file pane, an automatic dropdown menu for tag values and an unlimited number of custom fields. Its library fields and file pane view schemes are highly customizable.

Another Media Center 11 recommendation. MC 11 also does auto-completion when you type enough letters to narrow the matching list to a single item.

Alex B., I think I have the same CD (EMI GROC Oistrakh Szell ...) shown in your screenshot. Mine is tagged with

Composer=Brahms,
Album=Concerto, Violin...
Artist=Oistrakh_Szell_Cleveland Orchestra

for the concerto and a separate album name for the sonata. MC 11 is really quite flexible in its support for tags and database only fields.

Hey Alex and Bill,

Media Center looks very promising. I'll give it a good look.

Thanks,
Drew
