I'm using the 'WinAmp modern' skin and I was wondering what the range of its frequency analyzer is, on the main window. It's got 17 bars (yes, I counted) so I'm assuming each bar represents a jump of about 1 khz, from 0 up through 17-18 khz.
Anyone know?
winamp visualization can be plugin dependant. Most plugins let winamp render it, in which case the range is something around 60Hz to 15Khz or so, with the jumps being logaritmic. (It used to be up to around 20Khz, but seems that they decided to change it)
the in_mp3 plugin, if using fast layer3 EQ (the default option IIRC) uses the MP3 scalefactor bands for that. The range is similar, but the jumps are different.
the fast layer3 eq option was disabled as a default on clean installs a few versions back (just to clarify things)

What in_mp3 sends to the spectrum analyzer is different from just about everything else.
In general, winamp spectrum analyzer is linear
0hz at the very left, samplerate/4 hz in the middle, samplerate/2 at the right.
If the samplerate is 48khz, the far right would be 24khz, the middle 12khz, the far left goes down to 0khz.
(note: for in_mp3, the far right is 16khz, and the middle is something else)
note: what I have said is true for winamp2 through v5.1, it may not be true anymore for the latest winamp5.2x, it might have finally been changed in winamp's core to have 1khz in the middle like it should be, I don't know.
