Well, I don't think the iPod is a fashion or that people who listen to britney spears are the only ones who own iPods. I listen to Korn, Dream Theater, Bleeding Through, Soilwork, and a bunch of other metal bands. I purchased a iPod because I wanted something that used good hardware (I just came from a 3 Rio Karmas that all had the same cheap hard drive in them), came with good software, and something that was really easy to use.
Anyways, 5G iPods, 5.5G iPods, and 2G iPod nanos (I don't know about 1G nanos) are in fact gapless with the new firmwares.
Indeed there are people like you and me, who deviate from the average person in their listening habits and preferences in technology. I, for one, find that Technical Death Metal (Namely bands like Cryptopsy, The Monolith Deathcult, Spawn of Possession, Necrophagist, et cetera) is the only type of music which can occupate my mind enough for me to be entertained. And I also like Tool. Listening to Tool without gapless is blasphemy in my world.
But!
Snap out of your dreamy illusions where everybody has an IQ above 100, because there needs to be a hell of a lot people to balance out all of the intelligent people in this world, and those people all listen to fake marketing music, and really couldnt care less about a DAP's features.
"It can play music? So what? It can play video? So what? It's a DAP which all the cool people have? AWESOME!"
Bottom line is that only a fraction of ipod users care about gapless support, and if losing that fraction of customers costs less than implementing real gapless support, or flac support, or ogg support, or all of the above, then sorry dude - Why should Apple care?
