Musicmogo

Hi y'all,

Think a few members here could do me a favor?
A friend of mine has asked me to beta-test
this new mp3 music service http://mp3around.net
It is a legal, licensed site based in Europe.
We're just trying to make sure everything works smooth,
so we just need a few people to test signup system
and download 100 songs from our 500,000 song music library for free.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Is it "The Return of Allofmp3"?
10 cents per tracks; 1.5 euros per album... site obviously located in Russia. Did your friend paid for the right to distribute music worldwide? At this price it's really doubtful. The site is probably legal in Russia but I doubt that downloads (paid or not) from other country are. Same situation for allofmp3 if I'm not wrong.

Hi, what does this notice at the bottom mean:

All phonograms on Mp3Around.net are placed according license agreement # ЛС-3М-02-06 from ROMS

Days Service Ltd., 8, M. Yakimanka, Moscow, Russia, 119180

It is quite obvious that the license agreement with ROMS is not valid outside Russia. Did you contact publishing labels?
SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (RUSSIA)
EMI : Russia
Universal Music Russia

There is also IFPI office in Moscow, and I'm sure they can consult you how to setup a legal, licensed site.

Part of the problem is that actually it's not obvious at all.

To me it is clear to get a permission from someone who actually owns the property (or from a representative). Interesting FAQ on the law and online music.

Whoa! just found a legal online music site in Russia smile.gif

The Orchard signs landmark licensing deal with Yanga -- first legal Russian digital music retailer

Pioneering Download Site to Launch with Region's First Major Western Catalogue

The Orchard, the world's leading distributor and marketer of independent music, today announced that it has licensed its entire catalogue to Yanga, the first legitimate music download service in the Russian Federation and the first company in that region to secure digital rights to a major Western catalogue. Under the agreement, The Orchard will make available to Yanga its archive of nearly 1 million tracks, which encompasses independent music from a diverse variety of artists, labels, and genres – including indie rock, pop, hip-hop, classical, jazz, world music, and more.

[...]

Max E. Orlov, who oversees The Orchard's operations in Russia, added, "Effective protection of intellectual property rights is considered vital to Russia's economic future, as President Putin pointed out in his state-of-the-union address in May. By promoting legal digital commerce in Russia, we are helping to set the stage for other opportunities -- not just for The Orchard, but also for other legitimate companies in our industry."

Not a good subject for people who don't see in shades of grey. dry.gif

The government refuses to prosecute in Russia, the transaction takes place in Russia "legally" with the Russian local government's apparent blessing, and the data is then delivered electronically to a computer over the internet to a country where the transaction would not have been legal, but mere posession of the data is clearly legal. It's a brain twister and a legal conundrum. blink.gif

service looks very nice, very fast, a lot of "latin artists" selections. You can't beat the price. I wonder what the sources are, and what encoder they use.
Shade[ST]
Seeing as albums are generally incomplete, I doubt these sources are licensed by the disc Majors. Non-russian people with legal morality keep clear.
drumliner
lol... sources at least in some cases are without a doubt scene releases wink.gif
what's even more obvious is that the encodings are not made "in house" as they vary a lot - lame (various versions), fhg, xing... and of course all in different flavours (vbr, 192kbps cbr, stereo, joint stereo...)
quality: it's not just albums that are incomplete, there's also incomplete trax and by that i mean being less than half of what they should've been.
speed: browsing slow, dl-ing ok if you start several trax at once.

Not really, the Moscow prosecutor's office launched a criminal copyright case against allofmp3 recently.

Edit: Managed to find a press release that wasn't in Russian.

QUOTE
Legal action is being taken against allofmp3.com. There are two separate criminal proceedings ongoing in Russia regarding Allofmp3 directly. The first case is against the former director of MediaServices (the company that owns and runs the Allofmp3 service). The public prosecutor in Moscow has taken on this case and it is now in the trial phase. The second case is against a current director of MediaServices. This case remains in the investigation phase and again will be closely followed by IFPI.
