Full Version: AAC tag support in new Sony Walkmans?

I don't have a Sony Walkman and am not planning on getting one anytime soon, but I was just curious. Has anyone used one of the updated Sony Walkmans (Walkmen? Walkpersons?) with AAC support, and does it support the tagging system used by iTunes? I like AAC, but I worry about its current state of confusion (mp4 vs m4a, Itunes tags vs Nero tags, etc) I'm extremely happy with the iTunes/iPod "experience," but I would like to know how well supported my files are in other players.

No, iTunes tags are not supported.

Darn, I was afraid of that. A little off topic now, but what's the deal with AAC tags? Is there just no consitent standard and any company can do them how ever they like? Or is there a standard and everyone but Apple uses it? And, is it possible to add multiple tagging schemes to AAC files, so the files can be read by multiple players? And last but not least, how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Gambit
There is no official standard. Since iTunes tags are the most wide spread, they are considered "standard". Then there are also the Nero tags. iTunes mp4 files are somewhat of a mess. Nero mp4 files are gapless, the tags implementation is properly done, but they are not so popular. If you use foobar, then you are safe. IIRC it writes iTunes tags when possible (e.g. all fields are supported) and complements it with the Nero tag, if necessary.

And as far as the wood question goes... That depends on who is the woodchuck. If it's Chuck Norris, then the answer is "all of it".

Hi Gambit, slightly off-topic but related to AAC in Sony Walkman. What I would like to know is if they support AAC with SBR (HE-AAC).

Thanks,

Does anybody know if the new Walkman phones are able to play back gapless tracks (or even support of LAME gapless tags)?

Not sure about that, I will have to try.

Don't know about the phones, but my NW-A3000 does support gapless, but only with Atrac files. MP3 files are played back with a tiny pause. Not really annoying, and the pause is pretty small compared to other players.
